N80 to N80ie + Debranding Beginner Questions

Hi!

Ill be buying a Nokia N80 soon from my friend on the Orange network, but I would appretiate it if I could just get some answers to some questions first.

I have searched around but some questions still remain

1) Is there a risk involved in changing the product code? If so, is there anyway I can minimise it?

2) Can I use ANY N80ie Product Code? In my case, I live in England, so can I use any EURO one?

3) I have read that it's best if you change the product code back to the original after upgrading/debranding. Once I change it back to the Orange product code and another f/w becomes available, do I have to change it to a generic one?

Thank you very much in advance

No. The only risk would be perhaps from a warranty standpoint. Depending on the repairer you deal with, you may possibly void your warranty since you have "modified" your product through the process of de-branding it. It's a fine line.

Correct.

I'd avoid doing something like that personally because if you do it often enough, it may make the phone pack up. Something that you can't just unplug an IC and reflash with other methods is not something I'd be inclined to muck around with too much, particularly if you get the product code wrong for whatever reason.

In summary, once you've changed the product code, leave it alone. It hasn't affected me negatively and mine's an Australian bought phone which I converted to the Greek/Cyprus firmware purely so I can occasionally send an SMS to my family and friends in Greece.

Thank you very much in advance
