Head to head: Nokia E70 vs HTC S710

I couldn't let the review HTC S710 slip back to the supplier without comparing it as best I could with its equivalent model/match in the Symbian OS world - in this case, the year old Nokia E70. The S710 knocks the E70 for six in the looks department, but then the Nokia starts clawing the points back... Here's the S710/E70 head-to-head.

Read on in the full article.

Of course with all of these comparisons you must remember that it does depends on individual needs and preferences. I know Steve went to a lot of trouble to be even handed.

I really like the design of the Vox myself, but design isn't everything. Of course if you prefer Windows Mobile then its a real contender.

Absolutely. I couldn't give a damn about the quality of the camera/video. It's not something I'm interested in and so one of the major plus points for most S60 phones goes straight out of the window for me.

That's why reading the content of a review is so much more imoprtant than any "score" or "percentage" (something AAS got rid of a long time ago). That way you can balance the features you are interested in with those you aren't and draw your own conclusions.

Having purchased a WM5 phone a couple of months ago (HTC Hermes) after decades (Multiple Psions, P910a and E62) with Symbian I must say that WM5 is not too bad.

The Vox is WM6, which is a bit more stable. I find that, while WM5 is fast (at least in my Hermes) it is fairly unstable requiring often multiple soft resets each day. Further, some apps must be placed in the phones memory (vs. on the storage card) or further instability ensues. Of course - it is difficult to figure out where an app should be w/o experimentation though a few do note in their manuals that they should be installed on the phone.

I do miss the elegance of my P910's UI. It worked very well. WM5 is fussy, which makes driving while "phoning" more of a challenge - and one I am less and less likely to engage in.

Automated profile switching is getting better per one application I have found, but an app providing threaded SMS messaging is difficult to find.

While there are tons of apps for Windows Mobile, I must say that, on the whole, their quality is far inferior to that of apps developed for Symbian, particularly UIQ 2. There are some well established software houses with fairly robust offerings, but many One-offs, which can be a bit dicey.

But category sync and automated notification of meetings to various attendees goes a long way towards making up for the overall fussiness of the OS. Now if only ProfiMail integrated better w/ Outlook...

I think that it would have been a better comparison if you put the HTC S710 up against SE M600i.

I have tried the HTC S710 (Orange 650) and it is a very good phone but far to heavy at 140grams. (Preiously I had the c600 Windows mobile 5 at 105grams).

So I changed to the SE M600i at 112grams, its also very good and much lighter than the HTC S710.

It would be an interesting if you could do a head to head with the new HTC Wings and the new SE P1.

The HTC Wings is the newer lighter (120grams) version of the HTC S710.

I think a smartphone, which the HTC S710 is suppose to be, should be light.
Even the SE P1 (the M600i replacement) has put on weight.

Unfortunately All About Symbian seems to have turned into all about Nokia S60 3rd Edition so you're not likely to get that comparison 😞

You're being unfair:

1) What about all the other great UIQ 3 content we've had recently?
2) The M600 isn't a good match for the S710. The main attributes I tried to match in the Symbian world were a foldout qwerty keyboard, a non-touch screen interface, a phone-like appearance and the presence of 2mp camera and a music player. I think the E70 is the closest match, don't you?

Steve

Sorry Steve, the content you provide is great and I appreciate the hard work you put in to it. I guess I just get frustrated because UIQ seems so far off the radar in general in these comparisons, this wasn't the thread to pipe up in though.

Part of the reason for that is that the UIQ devices tend to be in a bit of a niche all of their own.

But the new P1i would make a good match against one of the newer HTC touch-screen communicators, I think. Watch this space.

No I don't think that would be a good match.

Both the HTC S710 and the SE M600i have been described as small light weight Smartphones. I read a review that said the wi-fi and camera were omitted from the M600i to keep the weight low. The HTC S710 is a Smartphone but has the weight of a pocket Pc.

Both these phones are suppose to be Smartphones, light enough to slip into a pocket without much fuss but powerful enough meet business needs. That is what a comparison should be about. Not always about individual features.

The HTC S710 replacement 'Wings' is 120 grams and the M600i replacement Pi is 124 grams. That will be a good match in a head to head.

Hm.... I still don't see the point in comparing touch-screen devices, designed to be largely driven by a stylus or fingernail, with ones designed to be driven from keypad alone - they're chalk and cheese. And different people will be drawn to each.

Steve

You would be comparing two reasonably light Smartphones that are easy to carry about, would meet the needs of someone who wanted a business type phone without the bulk.

Communicators are quite heavy and would be aimed at a separate market to the P1. I don't see a problem comparing a touch screen with a phone driven from a keypad. What about the Nokia N95, that could also be compared with the P1 or the Wings and that has neither a touch screen or a qwerty key pad.

All three have different operating systems, but all do much the same sort of things, regardless of how data is imputed into the device.

My next mobile will most likely be either the Wings or the P1.

Hi,

I don't know why but it says here I cannot post new threads so I have to post it as a answer in this thread, still it's quite relevant.

I have 9500 now, I was planning to buy the new E90 but then I was thinking on this and decided that the best functional design for me is something like E70, all those Communicators are just too big, get too much unhealthy attention from others and let's face it: all those office and other software is NOT really compatible with PC-equivalents.
Anyway I need the full keyboard for writing long SMSes and other simple documents.

My question is should I wait for some newer E70-like model or should I buy the current one?
Do they work on newer model, does somebody know?

Thanks

Kazio

I would say that an E61(i) would suite you better. Large 2.8" screen and full QWERTY keypad. It's a little bit wide though.
