Opening ".txt" documents

16 replies · 5,009 views · Started 21 May 2007

I often create short text documents on my computer using Notepad rather than word. I tend to save these as "XYZ.txt" files on my desktop. I used to send these to my SE phones no problem via Bluetooth. I can't seem to able to do this with the N95.

Well I can send them but can't open them. I have tried as a BT message or by transferring via PC Suite direct to memory. I have tried opeing using the file browser and Office on the phone but with no joy. The only way to get them usable on the phone is to save as "XYZ.doc" and then open in Office on the phone.

Is it really the case that the N95 cannot read ".txt" files and if so is there a freebie bit of software I can download to do so?

Cheers

Just tried it myself - created an abc.txt file on computer with some random text and sent it to my N95 via bluetooth, as well as copying the file to the microSD card. In both cases the file opened automatically in Notes.

Sorry, that doesn't actually help with your problem... but at least you know that the phone should be able to open them...

I think it does help, it means it should work but doesn't.

I have just tried again. When I try and open the BT message I get the following error:

Messaging: Feature not supported.

If I go to notes I can send a note to the PC and it opens in Notepad no problems. However, if I send it back to the phone I cannot open it and get the above message.

Anyone got any ideas how to get the "Feature supported"?

Cheers

Done a hard reset and it now works.

Done a back up of data still works.

Loaded Quickoffice and it doesn't work. Appears there is a clash. Off to speak to QO support.

I've previously encountered this and already been in touch with QuickOffice support. It seems that they do not currently support .txt files on the N95 ("the one phone not supported"😉. They are working on a fix. So, it seems if you have QuickOffice installed, you won't be able to open txt files. (I had to convert to Word doc then transfer file)

I have had the same reply, aside from working on the fix, from QO support. It does seem a little curious that this problem only seems to arise after upgrading from the read only version that comes with the phone. I find it hugely annoying.

Another workaround if you want to avoid creating .doc files is to use Notes in Outlook and then synch. The note is then synched to Notes on the N95, again far from an ideal solution.

To date QO support are being particularly unhelpful and do not give any impression that they are working on a fix for this problem. They claim it is a "factory" problem (which I take to mean Nokia) that is not their responsibility nor something they can fix.

This is strange given that text files work fine with the installed read only QO it is only after paying to upgrade that the functionality is lost. And they don't warn you about it either. Sounds to me like an upgrade problem.

I have downloaded a full trial version of MobiSystems "Officesuite 4" and this seems to be much the same as QO but it does handle TEXT files without a problem. I would suggest anyone thinking of upgrading QO take a look at Officesuite as an alternative.

Edit1: QO are now saying that it was a surprise that .txt function was disabled at the factory. There is no fix from QO and none planned it would seem. Off to Nokia for an explanation.

here's the email I received which would suggest it is a QO issue and not Nokia:

Hi Christopher,
Unfortunately you have the one device (N95) that does not support .txt files (which is what the ebooks are formatted in).
If you are interested in the ebooks, you can send them to the pc and modify them as .doc files and then they will be read on the N95.

We are planning on releasing an updated version for the N95 that will support txt files, but that will not be for a few more months.

regards,
Ed

Progress perhaps. I sent them this following their stock response:

Excuse me, but if the phone could read ".txt" files before QO v4, i.e. with the read-only version of QO v3, then what does that have to do with the device? It points more at an issue with QO being simply broken,

and they responded with:

Hi,
You're right, I have confirmed this is a software issue.

That is interesting and you have done better than me. I asked exactly the same question but QO put the blame was put on Nokia. I feel more correspondence with QO support coming on.

Maybe more people have posted the same problem with them and they've decided to look deeper into the issue.

Well Nokia never got back to me, no real surprise. However, continued correspondence with QO may have brought some joy. They now say that there will be an update in July and this will fix the problem and enable reading of ".txt files" on the N95.

Upgraded to QO 4.5 and the problem is solved, can save ".txt" files created in QO and open/edit files sent to the phone from elsewhere. Good news.

i find simple solution, i have same problem !
ok, the solution is that you must download free app fromhttp://drjukka.com/YTasks.html
after that down http://drjukka.com/files/YTasks_FileTypes_050_0_3rdEd.SISx
some tricky may be that you must sign http://drjukka.com/files/YTasks_Mainserver_050_0_Unsigned_3rdEd.SISx
because when you have signed mainserver than you can change app with you open txt files.
now when you install this 3 apps find text/play ->option -> map to new app-> notes and ther you go :icon14:

hot.jay wrote:i don't want to download 4.5 version ! and i don't wan't to pay for this 4.5 version 😉

Then what have you to do with this thread? This is an issue about 4.x messing up the ability to read .txt files. The N95 comes with 3.x built-in that has no problems, .txt files are fine, so that should satisfy those that don't want to download 4.5

For those of us that upgraded to 4.x we needed the application fixed not a workaround. Downloading 4.5 is the only sensible answer for 4.x owners as we have already bought it.
