T-Mobile blocking IM?

20 replies · 5,944 views · Started 22 May 2007

Any one noticed T-Mobile blocking IM? I used to be able to connect to Yahoo but suddenly Agile Messenger has stopped working on my N95, if connecting via T-Mobile. However, it works fine via WiFi. Anyone else had any problems?

Yes same here, i am going to phone them today and complain, not happy as i am paying for web and walk. Pricks

Well, to be fair, if you look at the Web n Walk term and conditions carefully, it does say that IM isn't allowed.

We do not permit use of this service to provide modem access for a computer or for peer to peer file sharing, internet phone calls or instant messaging.

So unless you upgrade to Web n Walk Pro/Max, I guess it's fully in their rights to block instant messaging.

yes sadly its in their T&C's. The basic web n walk package cannot be used to IM traffic. Its pretty harsh to be fair - as IM uses relatively low bandwidth. Fring still seems to work on my phone - can use msn and skype through it and its fine. I would love to have an argument with someone important from T-mobile about how they can justify charging more just to allow IM - seeing as it takes up f-all bandwidth and blocking it just pisses people off

Quite.

Fring still working for me, or at least it was on Monday.

Ok well i am going to phone them, if they wont enable it i will leave, thats all i want it for, stuff it

Right a quick solution for people who use msn and are finding it comes up with the error message when trying to connect.

For the time being use ebuddy.com

My setup is as follows thinkpad z60m with n95 as modem.

When i used my home broadband connection msn works fine suggesting the problem is t-mobile related.

I spoke to one of there tech guys earlier who claims that even the basic web and walk package has no bar on msn messenger and that it would not be in there interest to ban it because of the people using MSN on web and walk plus. I think what he was saying is that basically it would be hard to implement the block without it effecting people who pay for web and walk plus.

I was on the phone for over an hour and the guy was very helpful and said as of yet no one else has phoned up and pointed this connection issue out to t-mobile tech support. We tried all the stuff i had already tried and it seems that something is blocking msn messenger at the t-mobile end. He claims this isnt the case but i think maybe someone has implemented a block on the ports that msn uses and maybe didnt realise that is what they were doing.

Can people please post on here as to whether or not they can get msn messenger to work and what version they are using? mine worked fine until last week and then it stopped. The only way this problem will be resolved is if people phone t-mobile and point out this problem. At the moment they dont see it as there fault which it blatantly is!

At the end of the phonecall he suggested i use another messenger based service which is all well and good but im paying 45 a month so that i can use my n95 as a modem which it appears is now being restricted by t-mobile.

Come on guys if people report the problem then maybe it will get fixed!

well ive just tried mine and it still dont work!

very strange, im gonna remove web and walk from my account and then reinstate it and see if that does any good

mine is still not working, just tried it and suspected the same as everyone else on here, so i came online to see if anyone else had noticed, which they obviously have. I am going to ring them now and see what they say. I'll post my findings in little while.

Ok, just got off the phone to t-mobile cs. The girl who answered the call passed me onto a department who deals with the data side of things and he confirmed to me what we have all been suspecting. They are looking at ppl's usage and implementing blocks on ppl using services that they shouldn't be. (i.e. Me!).
I did say that it had worked up until the last few days and he said that they had been told to implement this as of 3 weeks ago, and to expect calls about it. He did also say that it's not permanent, so if you leave it a week it may start working again, but sadly it won't last.
The only answer, he said, was to upgrade to w&w plus, and all would be fine again, other than it costing more.
May i add that this is what i was told and is not my opinion so if anything i've repeated turns out to be incorrect it's t-mobile's fault and not mine. 😊

Well i have web and walk plus so that makes no sense at all!, im gonna phone up on tuesday and have a moan at t-mobile.

This is very poor! especially as this isnt being forwarded on to other technical support people

im also on web n walk plus and can not access msn messenger service using this connection yet i can directly on my phone using the symbian based msn clients?

Those 3rd party clients tend to use differant ports than the usual msn messenger software.

I think they have blocked a specific port that msn uses causing the problem, can you ring t-mobile up and report the problem
as they dont seem to be aware of it.

ill be giving them a call during the week, in fact i think ill be calling in to a store in person to complain about a few things!

Becuase then you have to text at 12p a time instead of a fraction of a penny data charges per MSN message, which as you have webnwalk doesnt even matter

Hmmm i phoned tech support, i was told there is nothing they could do, so i canceled my subscription.

All of a sudden, its now working, all day today fine???? go figure, maybe with all the complaints they changed something.

Well i am currently getting free data with my orange PAYG, so if they keep messing me about i will leave for good.

WHY IS EVERYTHING IN THE UK A FIN RIPPOFF!

Still doesn't work for me. :frown: Glad I didn't actually buy Agile Messenger, as that would've been money down the pan.

Well after some investigation i have found these results.

using port detective i tested the standard msn messenger ports 1863 and 1963 using my broadband connection

they all come back as open and working fine.

When tested using t-mobile connection both ports are blocked.

I will be phoning t-mobile in the morning to point this out to there Technical suport who claim that no ports are being blocked.

Im doing there job for them!

Bear in mind, that even if you do manage to get it working. T-Mobile are well within their rights to charge you for IM and fring traffic. You may get slapped with a big data bill one month. Its pretty simple for them to differentiate too.

I have an N95 on t-mobile web n walk and i cant access msn messenger either! tried using im+ and turbo msn, but they both ONLY work through wifi - my normal broadband connection. It's not FAIR! one of the best features of havin web on the go and we cant use it!
