FW Update bricked my N95

Hi people

Changed my product code from VF to Euro 1 - all went swimmingly. Then I did a restore and it all went wrong!!! No news there then!!! This was the day the new FW came out so no-one had posted about restore problems at that point. Could not reboot phone and tried the *, 3 and green button reset - no luck. Just kept giving me the same old "Phone startup failed. Contact the retailer" message.

Sent phone to service centre who said they could reflash phone. Has been there nearly 3 weeks but they cannot fix it. Firstly they tried to reflash but no luck. Then they said they needed a 'loader' and waited for that to be released. Then they needed a new USB cable with a different pin-out but that still didnt work. So they have sent it back to me. They have also stated that their friendly local Nokia Service Centre could not help either and are having to replace PCB to get phones working again.

So what can i do - VF will either send me a reconditioned phone as replacement but may have scratches etc or I can send away for repair.

Is there any way I can reflash the phone myself?

At the moment it starts but only displays a white screen with a blue Nokia logo and that is as far as it gets. I have tried the 3, * and green button thing again but no luck.

NSS cannot connect to it and Nokia Software Update does not recognise the phone.

Any ideas?

I would like to be able to rectify this myself. There are no local Service centres and if there was could they help seeing as I've already tried and been told it can't be done or is that all hot air?

Come on all you clever people and help me get out of this mess, I want my N95 back - fed up of using my old and useless 6820!!!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hi. Have you solved this?

Hi any progress, i just managed to do this to my phone with the bloddy same results as you.... this is crappy.

I have a tytn and have done many flashes and never had a problem,.... Windows all the way and bugger symbian..... Was a nice phone till now ... lol

@ Dean UK

I think the title of this thread should of been i bricked my N95, every where i have read about debranding the N95 it advises against restoring from backup as this could be the consequence so really sorry for you but you did it. You were also carrying out unsupported actions with your device so have invalidated the warranty by doing so which is why you should of immediately after debranding and flashing changed the code back as this is also what has caused you restore to fail. Really your only hope is to get a new N95 from Voda or send it to a Nokia Service centre as they will have different software and equipment as opposed to just any phone service centre.

@N95sa

Again sorry for your problems but just how is this Nokia's fault exactly or even Symbian's it is something you have done not them Unless you mean you just upgraded the firmware without changing anything in which case just get to a Nokia Service Centre or return to where you bought it from for a replacement.

Marc

I agree with Dogmann, it sucks when this happens but you have to know the risks when undertaking this kind of action and there is a reason why Nokia don't advertise or support the changing of product codes!

If the N95 was working OK after the Euro-1 FW flash but died after the restore, then I cannot understand why the * 3 GREEN hard-reset isn't working, as a restore does not write to the FW area, just the user-area.

Try the hard-reset 2 or 3 times more.

+ remember to hold the keys untilty get the start up screen. That takes a while and can be tricky to do!

You were trying to restore from backup to an effectively different piece of hardware.
Restoring from BU is a COMPLETE waste of time after flashing.
It's not what it was intended for and always creates issues.
Take the memcard out and do the 3 button trick again.
And in future, invest a little effort in a clean install - apps/configs, etc.
Sloth is one of the seven deadly sins - literally, in your case.
