The only way around this that I found on both the N80ie and N95 is to store the whole of the contacts name in last name and ignore first name. i.e.
FIRST NAME: John
LAST NAME: Smith
should be stored as:-
FIRST NAME:
LAST NAME: John Smith
Hope this helps. SMS will now read John Smith and not Smith John
