Colourful but elegant... why can't any Western phone makers try out some Japanese designs on us?
I have to agree with clive1, I think that this looks really bad. I have yet to see a Japanese phone that doesn't look downright ugly.
From a purely design point of view, I think that we've got in Europe a wide variety of models available that suit most categories of people. From the particularly dull designs (Nokia of course) to the silly designer designs (Nokia) to the though ugly brick designs (yep, Nokia again) to classy, elegant designs (Samsung, LG) to the classy designer designs (yep, LG again) to whatever you want.
Problem is: Nokia obviously makes some efforts to get out of its image of maker of brick butt-ugly phones but the improvement are very very slow. Most Nokia phone's design are still desperately dull compared to the competition. Quite frankly, if I went to a phone shop and had to choose a phone solely based on the way it looks (which is what many people do), I'd never get a Nokia. In fact, I'd probably not even notice the Nokia phones.
I can do nothing but disagree with your comment, elp.
Nokia has still the best design of a mobile phone EVER, which in my opinion, belongs to the always classy and intemporal Nokia 8850. Not to mention newer models in the 88xx range.....if you consider those designs dull or ugly, then I have nothing else to say :]
And talking about Samsung or LG models (both Korean and not European, indeed), I can't really see where the supposedly great designs are.....but, again, it's only my opinion...
About japanese designs....well, I would never say they are ugly....they are certainly different from what we are used to in Europe, most of them being clamshells with a really defined japanese-style design. It's only a different style for a culture with a different appeal for electronic devices. I think most of them are quite beautiful indeed.
IMO Nokia has long gone its crazy designs.I like their designs since 6630 onwards. Also I find several very good looking Japanese clamshells or sliders,so they aren't so bad.I love all the designs made by Samsung and Nokia has a long way to reach them in this aspect. All this is my PERSONAL opinion.
All these opinions are 100% matters of taste, there's no possible way you can prove something's ugly or beautiful.
The number of phones sold by major manufacturers is so huge (over 1 billion phones a year), and they reach such a varied audience, I honestly don't think you can claim that phones should look a certain way because whatever you choose may not be to the tastes of the majority.
It's like films: is there really such a thing as a perfect movie? No, there are just movies that certain people like but other people hate. A film studio would be absolutely crazy if they tried to specialise in one kind of film, because they'd lose most of their audience over time.
The one thing phone makers have to do is vary their designs, and make phones for every kind of phone user. That's why the success of the RAZR for Motorola isn't healthy on its own, it's just one kind of phone that appeals to one kind of audience. They're putting all their eggs in one basket if they rely on it too much.
ELP, I completely disagree about Nokia's designs, they might not be to your taste but I love their "designer" ranges, the black and white series and the later amber and pink series. And what you call classy and elegant (the LG phones) I call rather dull. What I call classy and elegant (the Japanese phone above) you call "really bad". There's absolutely no way to resolve this at all.
I think Sharp phones are great, the design may be a little different but I certainly prefer it to the N95 I own. Why won't someone please start distributing Sharp's high end phones in Europe?

Couldn't agree more! I still have one. 😊 Most beautiful phone ever made IMO.
Hello.
I want to ask, how I can buy sh904i outside Japan (what is the price or at least order of price) and would it works properly inside the European telecommunications system?
This phone is really marvelous.
Thank you for your help.
