Hi All,
I have been thinking of getting a satnav for a whle now, but cant justify it as i would only need it about 6 times a year when i play at new golf courses that not played before. Also, living in East London dont know how long it would be mine!
Then comes along the N95, the answer to all my prayers(!), as i cant resist the latest phones each year. Also i am touring the west coast of USA in september so satnav would be a great help. This is where my questions arise for you learned experts on all things N95.
Will i be able to download maps of usa (via PC)onto the phone, before i go, so that i will not have to download by internet via the N95 when i am in USA?
On a slightly different note, am i right in thinking that to use email and internet on this phone i will need to subscribe to a ISP, or will i automatically get it through t-mobile, vodafone etc.?
If this is the case, will i be able to use those services while i am in USA (without ridiculously expensive roaming charges of course). I intend getting a US phonecard for normal use whilst i am there?
Sorry for long first post, but i've been storing up th e questions for a while.
cheers
jim
You can download maps via PC using the MapLoader app.
Email and Internet will work via WLAN or a cellular packet data connection (GPRS). For packet data, you need a data plan/subscription from the network operator who provides the SIM card. Note that when travelling abroad, the roaming costs may get quite high.
The internet and email comes straight through T-Mobile, Vodafone etc, but theirs no way to escape ridiculously high roaming charges!
You will need to pay a subscription fees to use the navigation turn by turn feature of your nokia n95, but you can use the GPS for locating places and directions for free.
Thanks guys.
A few further questions then
Can i load all world maps from maploader?
Re using Internet and email on the N95. SO do I understand this correctly - as I already have an account with AOL. If i am in a wireless hotspot, can i use the phone to connect by wlan for free using my AOL account - and thereby not have to pay the SIM provider for connecting.
I meant to say in my first post that I would be using a US simcard not a phone card. I do this all the time when I am in Europe and works out a lot cheaper.
Also, I will probably get the phone through a provider who is giving free subscription to turn by turn satnav.
Cheers

1) u can load all the maps but it will eat up a LOT of memory and I am not sure if the biggest microSD 2G will fit all of them < I might be wrong> but u can if they fit
2) For the Wlan, if you are in a hotspot that offers free connectivity like Starbucks, all you do is select wlan from your phone browser and the name of their hotspot and you're online. If they charge for it then you need to pay to use that w-network for example airports. If u have AOL internet then you need to connect to an AOL network only. Hotspots connect you to the isp that hosts them.
3) for email if it is a pop3/imap4 then u just set it up from the email settings under messages and then u can connect to a wifi hotspot and retrieve them. If is a web based email then you just use your phone browser to go the email website and do what u do on a regular computer.
4) As for the NAV, you need to pay a yearly/ monthly/ weekly fee to Smart2go to use the live turn by turn navigation. I dont think any provider may provide you with free NAV because till now only this software recognizes the built in GPS chip <Again I might be wrong about this, this is the best of my knowledge>

Hi there,
every program, which uses the S60 location API can use the internal GPS. There are already some (also free) offboard systems, whick do so:
- amazegps
- Nav4all
(- Nokia SportsTracker)
And some of the commercial products also work with it:
- CoPilot works
- Viewranger works
- rumours about Route 66 working with it
- TTN6 should work sometime in the future
