N73: replacing joystick w/D-Pad

6 replies · 13,766 views · Started 27 May 2007

Hi,

I really like my N73, with one exception: the joystick. It bought it factory-sealed, but it has been showing some slight "dead-stick rattle" right from the start. It still works perfectly and better than any HTC or Sony phone joystick I have ever used, but I just dislike cell phone joysticks in general.

Question: does anyone know whether it is possible to replace the N73 joystick with a D-Pad, somehow? A "custom" modification with a part from some other Nokia model?

Thanks,

Gary

I've never heard of anything like that, but who's to say it can't be done 😉 Obviously, any modification would invalidate the warranty.

I think the N72 keypad/d-pad combination could have a shot at adaptation, they are very similar sizes. Any electronics gurus out there who would be willing to look at the relevant schematics to see if this is feasible?

BUMP 😉.

Come on, there's gotta be SOMEONE out there who can read schematics and see if this is doable...

It can probably be done and I have the same thing in mind with my E70. The problem is that you need to cut the cover to make some room for the d-pad and you don't have that room. I really miss N70's d-pad.

you can purchase a new pcb board with joystick from ebay for about 5 pound. then go to you tube on how to dissasemble your phone to fit the new part. any problems please ask. hope this helps😊

Hi my Nokia N73's little joystick fell off today. I did luckily catch it and slipped it back on and now I have a problem.

When I use it and push the joystick in...it no longer goes in! So I cannot use it to select anything. I have tried pulling it off again and putting it back on but it does not work.

If anyone can help please do!
