Avantgo?

Hi all,

I've just tried to install the S60 version of Avantgo and its saying its not compatible. Any idea if Avantgo are working on a version for the N95 or if there are any other alternatives? I've had a look at mobiReader but it doesn't let you sync from the phone, you've got to do it from your PC which is not always possible for me :frown:

Coming from a Treo 750 (WM5) I have to admit to being extremely surprised at the lack of backward compatibility within the Symbian OS's.

TIA

Sadly the Avantgo client is not S60 v3 compatible, something I bemoan, as it was I program I loved and sorely miss, especially, as you note, that all the other competitors only allow syncing from a PC. Even more sadly, Avantgo doen't seem in any hurry to create a suitable client either, as I've mailed them a couple of times for over a year (I wanted it for my N80) trying to establish when I could expect one. :frown:

Oh well, I guess I'm going to have to start getting used to owning a device with such a poorly supported OS (compared to Palm and MS). However I have emailed Avantgo to ask about S60 3rd edition support, so hopefully we'll reach critical mass soon and get what we're waiting for.

This is the response I got from Avantgo, does anyone know what he means by using Opera as an alternative 😕

Hello,

Thanks for contacting AvantGo Support!

This device is not supported at this time. Click the 'Notify Me by Email if this Answer is Updated' below, for changes in system requirements.

Another solution may be installing Opera Mini

I think they are just referring to its RSS function. I've used FreeNews for the past couple of years while AvantGo was/is unavailable. Not as good a solution but I think it is one of the better RSS tools.

chrsfrwll, could you tell me if freenews caches the RSS threads to memory or do you have to have a live connection? I usually sync my news before getting on the tube and then read it when we go underground.

cheers

Interestingly, they have just released a new version (which I d/l today), and this new version is much better than the last version I had. The front end is cleaner and settings better managed.

Re your question, yes, it does cache the threads but as with all RSS readers, you only get the first part of the story/headline. However, headlines and summaries are cached by their service, making for quick d/l. If you want the full story you need a connection. FreeNews handles this well and if offline, which they call "Flight Mode", the story gets marked and automatically d/l when back online. D/L storys are saved to cache as well. Images are also well handled and there is the option to open the story in the browser if required.

Pop over to freerangeinc dot com and have a trial.
