Hello,
I've got a nokia 5500, that I try to connect using 'data transfer' (I run Linux, so nokias pc suite is out of question). Up until last week it worked most of the time, but I occasionally got an error message 'Unable to activate data transfer mode. Memory card is in use by another application'.
This week, however, the error message occurs every single time I try to connect the phone. I have even tried to re-initialize the phone (*#7370#), whereupon it seemed to work a little bit better - I managed to connect once or twice to install some programs.
I suppose it could be one of the programs I've installed, but I've tried to un-install them one at a time, but with no success. (And I haven't installed anything very dodgy - only Autolock, YBrowser, QReader and Calcium)
So, my question is - Is there a way to really close all offending programs? A colleague suggested switching the phone off, and switching it back on with the USB cable plugged, but that doesn't seem to work either.
Or at least something to find out what files are locked? (Something like unix's 'fuser' would be great - especially with the 'k switch!)
I saw similar problem on all forums around. I have my e70. I did all I could. Same problem. Make sure Camera and Voicerec don't pont to removable card... done. Uninstalled all software from the phone.... done. Deleted all stuff from the removable card. I even tried to format the card.. says "can't format, memory in use..." What the heck...
Resterted with USB plugged in ... no help.
But what helped is using another memory card.
So it seems
a) memory card is corrupted or OR
b) there is something installed
- could be like on the card what I can't see in the file browser, someting that I can't see as an installed application
I am going to buy a memory card reader and I will try to look at it and perhaps format it.
I will post my findings.
Have you configured the messaging memory ("Memory in use" setting in the Messaging app) to the memory card instead of phone memory?
Or, uninstall apps one by one and try in-between. When the problem goes away just after uninstalling some app, you know which one's causing problems.

I found it!
It turns out that once I removed the 'Photography' application it works again!

I just un-installed it, and everything works as a charm.
(I'm still interested in knowing if there is a way of figuring out what program grabs what resource though...)

I shouldn't have been quite so quick. I just re-installed 'photography' and USB mass-storage still works.....

I had this problem too. I had Best KeyLocker installed on the card, as soon as I installed it on the phone memory everything was OK. Perhaps just deactivating would have also done the trick.
i dont think that this problem is bcoz of any apps above. bcoz, i never installed any of them above and still i m facing the problem.
