MPEG-4 AAC is the best in terms of quality and space, as it is a more superior codec.

If you compare an MP3 and AAC file at the same bitrate, the AAC will sound better. Essentially, you can get way with a bitrate about 2/3rds of an MP3 to yield the same quality, thus a smaller file.

To encode, you can use the free Nokia Music Manager (part of the Nokia PC Suite). Also winamp is able to encode these files.

Maybe aac+ - little files with, for my ears, great sound.

Ogg files give about a 50% saving in file size for the same quality, which is why I'm waiting with baited breath for a version of Symbian OggPlay that works on the N95.

Thats right AAC+ (aka HE-AAC) is superior to regular AAC (LC-AAC). You need the Pro version of winamp to encode to HE-AAC though.

Have found a programe called 'switch' to convert the files and seems to offer lots of file choices.

dosent offer aac+ though:frown:

anyone else used this one?

To be honest, there is no real gain for converting MP3 to another format. You've already lost the majority of the quality and re-encoding will probably make this worse. If you have existing MP3's leave them as they are. You should only convert to AAC+ with new CD rips.

the reason i choose to convert them though is that normall mp3 files take up way to much space. I have found by converting them to aac that the file size is less than half.

As Nigma say, it will seriously damage the sound quality. Leave them as MP3 or re-rip the CD's to ACC.

AAC is not a huge amount better than MP3. It tends to be better bellow 128kbps, but i would not bother with that unless you like the underwater sound 😉

I dont think that re-encoding the files from MP3 to MP4 will eat up the quality.. i did it myself.. i did not recognize any quality diff on the phone itself.. but the size was less than half n thts wonders.....

It makes a very noticeable difference, i guess maybe you have poor MP3' to begin with.
