Ducks and the Nokia 5700 XpressMusic!

26 replies · 5,328 views · Started 02 June 2007

If there are ducks in the photos, it can only be another Krisse smartphone review, here looking at the Nokia 5700 XpressMusic, perhaps the ultimate High Street music phone but with the power of S60 3rd Edition under the hood.

Read on in the full article.

2 Questions

1. Does the flash work as a flashlight?

2. is the comparison with 5300 still coming?

1. No, no torch. However, the screen is very bright when put on its maximum setting, and works pretty well for finding things in the dark.

I hadn't actually heard of camera flashes being used as torches, sounds like a really good idea, is this possible on other phones?

2. There's an article on the way which will have the 5700 and 5300 in it.

Hey.

Could someone please tell me about the phones battery life? (Talk/standby time).

I've had the n80 since the day it came out & have finally lost all paitence.

My average use is 1hr of talktime, 20messages, 5 photo's. 30 mins of browsing + music.

I carry 2 spare batteries & still end up having the phone die on me 😞.

Could someone please reccomend a s60 phone with a decent batterylife & can survive without having to be charged as soon as its nightfall?

Thnx 😊

It is possible on other phones, many Sony-Ericsson's use it, and supposedly the N93 did as well

but i noticed in your review you said there was an option in the camera for the flash to be permanently on, i guess theoretically you could use that as a flashlight

Looking forward to that comparison 😉

"Could someone please tell me about the phones battery life? "

Here's the official figures for the 5700:

Talk time = 3.5 hours on GSM, 2.5 hours on 3G (UMTS/WCDMA)
Standby time = 12 days
Videophone time = 1.7 hours
Music playback = 10 hours
Video playback = 4 hours

Battery life on smartphones though isn't as simple as that though. There is no single "battery life", it all depends on what you do and how much you do it.

You said you've had the N80 since it came out, the original battery would have worn out by now. Batteries wear out with use, and Lithium batteries also wear out even if you don't use them, they deteriorate over time. That's why you have to be careful when buying batteries as old lithium batteries are useless, even if they're still sealed in their original sales package.

"My average use is 1hr of talktime, 20messages, 5 photo's. 30 mins of browsing + music."

It sounds like there's something wrong with your phone if it loses battery life that quickly. Either that, or the batteries are worn out.

But if you really want the longest battery life, smartphones in general aren't a good idea as they have to use the same battery for a powerful computer and a telephone. Non-smart phones can do most of the tasks you listed: calls, messages, photos and music are all standard features on many non-smart models. Proper browsing is impossible though.

"i noticed in your review you said there was an option in the camera for the flash to be permanently on"

Not quite. I said there was an option for the flash to always be used when taking a picture. It's only on for 1 second while the camera captures the image.

Hi, just want to know if you think an owner of an N91 would feel that this was an improvement over the N91, namely, does it have gapless playback (no blank space between continuous tracks, like classical music or dance music mixes)

Of course it seems the advantages are that it is the new FP1 and has a much better screen. Is it an upgrade, an overgrade, or a downgrade?

Or should we wait for the next "music" N series phone?

Whether or not you want to move to the 5700 from the N91 depends on what features you find most important.

The 5700 doesn't have gapless playback, there's a one second silent gap between two continuous tracks. I ought to add that to the review actually, thanks for reminding me.

However it is a completely silent gap which is an improvement on the old S60 music players you found on things like the E61. 😉

Musicwise I think the most significant upgrade is the 5700's support for A2DP bluetooth stereo headphones, they make it very convenient indeed to listen to music if you have your phone stowed away somewhere, and some bluetooth headphones include built-in music and call controls.

The screen is particularly excellent, the 240x320 resolution makes things a lot clearer on the screen, and many applications and games now demand this resolution in order to function. Video playback on the 5700 is the best I've seen so far on a smartphone. It's also good because the twisting mechanism lets you stand the phone horizontally on a table so you can watch the video like a mini TV.

You can see a video of the video in action on the Gadget Picture Show:

http://www.neoncherry.com/gadgetpictureshow/readarticle.php?article_id=22

On the other hand the N91 does have a 4gig or 8gig HDD, whereas the 5700 can only store 2 gigabytes per microSD memory card. If you use more than 2 gigs to store music, then you might have trouble switching to the 5700. You could of course use several microSD cards with the 5700, as the phone's card slot supports swapping them without turning off the phone, but this is less convenient than just having everything stored on one HDD.

"Or should we wait for the next "music" N series phone?"

Well... the Nseries tag is mainly a marketing thing, and more to do with Nokia's corporate structure than huge differences in Nokia's S60 phones. Nseries phones are made and marketed by Nokia Multimedia, whereas the numbered phones are made and marketed by Nokia Mobile Phones. They're both very keen on making music phones, so you'll see some intra-company rivalry between them over the next few years, especially now that NMP have launched the XpressMusic range (which the 5700 is a part of).

The very latest phones announced by the Mobile Phones division have got compatibility with 4 gigabyte SDHC microSD cards, for example the new Nokia 6500 Slide, so the N91's HDD is becoming less and less of an advantage as time goes by.

krisse.....so is the rebooting still happening?..overally...do u recommend this phone for its price point?......and the audio quality....does it live up to the "Xpress Music" name?....i mean...it might juz be a marketting trick...but in general...is it good enuff to deserve the "Xpress Music" on the back of the phone?

"krisse.....so is the rebooting still happening?"

No. It only happened twice during the first few days, and after I'd updated the firmware it didn't happen at all, so I assume the firmware update has cured it.

"do u recommend this phone for its price point?"

Well, it depends what you're looking for from a phone. I'd say the 5700 is pretty good value, but the 6290 is even better value.

"......and the audio quality....does it live up to the "Xpress Music" name?....i mean...it might juz be a marketting trick...but in general...is it good enuff to deserve the "Xpress Music" on the back of the phone?"

It's definitely very good as a music phone, this isn't a marketing trick. The sound quality is very good, and the controls are excellent. You can twist the controls to the front they work just as easily as the controls on a dedicated music player.

As far as XpressMusic goes, the 5700 is the best XpressMusic phone available at the moment, the sound quality is a lot better than on the 5300 for example.

The support for A2DP bluetooth stereo headphones is also a very nice feature, I've really enjoyed using bluetooth headphones.

There's still stuff they need to improve, it would have been nice to have gapless playback for example, and the controls have an annoying one second delay in responding, but overall this is one of the best music phones on the market.

Nice review but could you tell me how much free ram there is at startup on this phone please?

Answer regarding camera's LED use as a torch: possible on N70, using David Siorpaes' Flashlight, Torch (freeware, posted on N70's forum) and N70 Torch by OTstudio. There's also spotOn, also freeware, but the light emitted is very low.

Great review buddy, also u said best xpressmusic phone, but who wins the best music phone tag, SE's walkman or nokia's 5700. On a comparitive basis, does it have "megabass" kind of thing.

which is betterrr the nokia 6290 or the nokia 5700?

is there a big differencee??

is it really different the speaker phones??

which one has a better browserr??

can you watch videos in both??

which one is better?

I recently bought this thing and it's great - the battery holds for solid 2 weeks, the speakers are loud, the camera is good, no torch (sad - my old (now crushed) SE k700i had one), I just love the S60 3rd ed FP1 (love the new browser), much stuff comes with it, and actually i give it 9/10, because of the joystick (easily breakable) and the turnable lower part - another thing that can break really soon

"which is betterrr the nokia 6290 or the nokia 5700?"

It depends what you want out of a phone, they both have their strong points. The 6290 doesn't support bluetooth stereo whereas the 5700 does. The 6290 has a nicer screen and a nicer keypad. The 5700 has a twistable camera and bigger music controls.

"is there a big differencee??"

Not that big a difference, apart from the form factor.

"is it really different the speaker phones??"

I don't understand the question!

"which one has a better browserr??"

Their browsers are identical.

"can you watch videos in both??"

Yes, their video players are identical.

"which one is better?"

It depends what you want from a phone!

I actually found the twistable keypad very very rugged, I didn't notice any problems with it at all. I tried twisting it a lot to see if it got any weaker but it didn't, it was probably the most impressive innovation on the phone.

Yes, moving parts are always more vulnerable than non-moving, but if you avoid all moving parts you would have no clamshell or slider phones at all.

I didn't like the joystick though, but then I don't like ANY phone joysticks.

I haven't used a walkman phone so I can't really compare them. The 5700 does have a bass boost option, as do all new S60 phones.

hi krisse

I haven't used a 3250 so I can't compare them directly.

If you're talking about the external speaker, the 5700 has two external stereo speakers whereas the 3250 (as far as I can tell) has just one external speaker. I think that makes the 5700 superior, although as I said I haven't used the 3250.

Hi krisse,

I have read your review & thanks for such a detail one.

Just curious about the quality of camera i.e. how it is in general if we compare it with N70 or W700i or K750i. All of these comparative models 2 mp camera is being considered as great in reviews at gsmarena.com. I have seen samples at review page & it looks that pictures are some how having purple flavour & last two are also blurred.

I haven't found a review of 5700 camera any where yet and expecting some details on camera from you.

Thanks

All I can say is, look at the samples. I tried to take pictures in various different conditions and hopefully those pictures are representative of the camera.

I haven't used any of the phones you mention, so I really can't make any direct comparisons. Sorry I can't be of more assistance! :frown:

i saw the technical specifications of the nokia 5700 on their website. it says that it supports up to 4gb micro sd. but there are no ordinary 4gb micro sd out there except or the sdhc's. does that mean the 5700 compliant with sdhc cards?

hi krisse! sorry to double post. the link on your review is for nokia europe. i read the 4gb compatible 5700 in nokia asia url. just see it there. sorry i can't post the url coz this forum only allows posting of website or email links after a user have made 10 posts or more. i think it's a bit confusing coz i don't think nokia's technical specs differs from region to region? does anyone clarify this confusion on my head? thanks!

hello guyz
i have a very good newz
the torch for 5700 can work without any use of application or anything
its just a bug in the phone

herez how u enable it
access the camera through the menu, NOT through twisting
set the flash to always on
then take a picture with the joystick, then as soon as the flash goes out, immediately twist the phone 90 degrees opposite u
the flash should be on then
it stays on until u exit from camera application
u can use this flash to shoot videos too !!!!!

this is NO LIE
this is NO JOKE

try it urself
