N95 GPS Query

I'm on PAYG with Virgin Mobile and have been shocked by the reduction in my credit that has happened while playing with the GPS software (Nokia Maps & Tom Tom). Isn't GPS free to use, apart from any maps that are downloaded via the network? My last session cost me approx. 14, and that was for a 10-15 minute session. If that is the cost, I will not be able to use it. Any help/advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

i think you must have downloaded some maps using the gprs, which is internet provided by your network. so coz of data usage, you might have lost ur credit, if you wanted to use the maps software, its better to download the whole maps using your home wireless lan internet.once you download to your N95, there is no need to connect to the network from the next time onwards, hope this helps. cheers.

Thanks for the prompt reply. So from now on on, there shouldn't be anymore cost incurred via my network? This is making me very daubious about switching on the GPS software. I cannot afford to keep on having this happen to me 😮

You will use data for planning routes (it connects to the server and downloads the route). However this is much much less than downloading the maps themselves.

So, does it constantly download data along the route, or is it a one off when you start off? Any examples of the cost that you could give me? Thanks

I think you people know about the fact that this maps software can't be able to give any navigation( i mean step to step instructions, take right, left etc). if you need navigation you need to pay about 50 for 3 years. i thinks that's waste of money. if you use some other applications like route66 or tomtom it will be more less. if you want you can download from some websites. if you just wanted to see the maps and all, its better to download the maps to the phone and use it for just planning. you can download the mpas from www dot smart2go dot com. hope this helps.

If you go into the Settings page of the MAPS application, you can DISABLE Network access, then GPRS data charges cannot be incurred.

I also agree with the other forum user who recommended you download the entire map for your region/country using your PC and USB data cable (or fdirectly using the phone on wi-fi connection).

I was wondering, 'What is the most fabulously useful tip I've ever read on here', and now I have a winner!

Cheers mate... I didn't know this thing even existed.
