I've just bought an N95.
I've found that the bundled Maps software is annoying! It takes forever to download maps from the Map Loader software and you have to pay for the navigation feature (although I'm told there's a hack for this somewhere??)
Are there any other GPS programs that will work with the internal GPS receiver (I'm based in the UK but am travelling to Netherland/Belgium/Italy over the next few weeks so having maps for here too would be desirable)
Thanks
I hardly call 30 minutes an age but granted it does take quite a long time. Just start up the d/l and go do something else while your computer gets on with it. As for having to pay for the navigation part of the software, er the mapping software is free and you're griping about a few quid for navigation? (Oh, and don't bother looking on here for hacks)
There are reports of other mapping software that will work. Your best bet is to do a search (wonderful tool, the search function) of the forums.
The most recent version of Copilot is reported to work. But frankly you are probably better of going with an external Bluetooth GPS reciver if GPS functionality is critical to you. The onboard GPS performance can be patchy (although there are varying reports of this). I went with a Holux 32 channel reciever and I haven't regretted it yet. This also opens up some wider options Such as TomTom, Route66 and others - and it does improve performance (at least in terms of acquiring and locking on to satelites) considerably, even with the native Maps software.
Hi, if you want i can give you route66 software with uk maps, i don't have another maps but if you google it, i bet you can surely find some. let me know if you want, i will send you the link. i agree with the other member who said about using bluetooth gps, coz you were saying you are going to do lot of travelling so, its best to take a car charger for N95 and a bluetooth gps. coz when using internal gps on n95 , the battery drains out quickly. any way let us know, once you get it, you can give a try and decide. cheers.
the annoying thing about route 66 is it doesn't do full post code search or speed camera overlays
However, i've heard lots of talk about a free version, you can use it to evaluate the product before spending the money to buy a legit copy
Does Co pilot have these features?
Really, of all the software I have found TomTom to have the most features and the most community support.
As for free versions of route66, well I guess that depends on your definition of 'free'. There is a thriving trade in illegal Symbian software (if you know where to look), so it all depends on your moral standpoint on these issues.
Personally, knowing nothing about GPS when I started, I was anxious to try as many different packages as I could before settling on any single one before paying out a small fortune in trying them all. So I guess my own morality is questionable in that regard. (Particularly after wasting £50+ in subscribing to the full native 'maps' software). But having done this I would certainly give very serious consideration to paying for TomTom in the future for an updated version, or for additional maps.
But again, so long as you insist on sticking with the internal GPS, your options are always going to be limited.
PS
Please don't place any illegal links here anyone, thanks! If anybody is interested in exploring this topic, Google and Bittorrent make finding this sort of stuff trivial anyway.
I've solved my problems by installing the Route66 program. Never been more satisfied really.
It works like a charm with the internal GPS of N95.
over and out
Intergrated GPS is free...
Navigation software is free....(TomTom, Garmin etc)
but we have to pay for the maps....right?
plz pm me :_( need help
thank you in advance!
Nokia navigation softare (Nokia Maps) is free (and built-in with many Nokia phones). What's not free is the turn-by-turn navigation assistance (with and without voice guidance). But many phones include a month, three months or even a year's worth of that, depending on the phone/country.
TomTom, Garmin, Route66 are not free as they are commercial applications (but they come with maps and navigation assistance).
I really can't see what the problem is with the internal GPS. Leave the keypad open, get a lock in 30 secs max and it works flawlessly in the UK and Europe (probably elsewhere, but haven't tried). It does drain the battery, but just get a cheap in car charger.

Maps are free from nokia. Where you end up having to pay is by downloading through your service provider. If you do not have a good data plan I advise using your PC to get the maps then update your phone.
