I know that on a PC when you install software and then uninstall it more than likely there will ALWAYS be something left behind. Well when I install software on my N80 I always select the install to memory card option. Does the software install EVERYTHING on the memory card, or does it put files on the phone as well?
I only ask because I thought that it installed everything onto the memory card but just recently I installed smartmovie which has a 60min demo mode and thought it would be a good test to see if everything really is installed on the memory card or not, so I uninstalled smartmovie and then reinstalled it and the demo time was still at 58min which is where it was when I uninstalled it. It should have reset back to 60 min.
So where are these programs hiding extra files at? I am thinking about just trying a different memory card to see if that works. Any other ideas?
Just to note, I am NOT asking for advice on how to bypass the demo mode, I am simply curious as to where extra files are being put by not only this program but possibly other programs that I install and uninstall.
some programs leave files in phone after uninstall, some programs install some files on phone even you put installation on card. you ask for location ? look at private folder (you must use mass storage mode on phone and look at memory card for private folder), than c:\system\data folder, than e:\system\data etc. in short you answer yourself "... know that on a PC when you install software and then uninstall it more than likely there will ALWAYS be something left behind.." same thing is with symbian OS.
Yeah I tried using a different memory card and reinstalling the software and the time stayed the same. So you are correct as the software DOES install files to the phone as well as the memory card.
With my computer I usually format at least once a month just to clear all the garbage programs leave behind. I was hoping that by using a memory card I would avoid building up a buncha crap left behind by uninstalled programs. Sometimes I just like to try programs out and see if they are useful or not which most of the time they aren't so I uninstall them. But now I am more weary to do this because I don't want a buncha crap left behind on my phone causing possible corruption.
Is there a way to clear EVERYTHING out on a phone? Like a FORMAT per say on a phone? Would a hard reset do the trick maybe?
formating is unnecesary because amount of junk files is very small and this junk files don't have influence on OS, bdw. symbian on your n80 is more stabile than win on pc. if we talk about bsod 😃 if you want clear everything, you can format your phone or use NSU and install or reinstall your firmware. in this process everything will be erased from your phone (don't forget to back up your contacts, pics etc.)
Well thats good to know that they won't cause any issues.
Rather than do a firmware update would doing a hard reset clear everything out?
Wirelessly posted (Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.1.7196/1690; en; U; ssr))

Yes..A hard format using the green call, * key and no 3 key will clear all file remains on C/ ..Alternatively use a file explorer and manually clear them yourself.Wouldn't worry though.Only certain apps like psiloc and worldmate leave significant stuff on drive c.E.G..Most games and apps leave an insignificant .Ini file that is maybe 10 bytes in filesize.Regards.
