Nokia N95 Woes

Hi,

I got myself an N95 a fortnight ago from Orange as an upgrade. From day one there were some crashes but I put it down to being such new technology and put up with it. Then I moved to edinburgh (temporarily, new house delayed, long story) and the crashes became almost constant whenever I did anything with the phone and on around 50% of calls, the other person couldn't hear me. Any data transfer on 3G resulted in a crash and reboot of the phone within about 30 seconds. I worked out it was only 3G functionality that was causing crashes (not much 3G north of Edi). I switched to '2G only' in settings, called orange, they had me do some hard resets and stuff then eventually agreed a replacement was in order.

The replacement arrived this morning, now data is fine (I'm writing this via my 3G connection now) apart from the odd crash in the web application followed by a restart. The real problem is that the onboard mic still seems intermittent. around 50% of the time the other person can't hear me. I've not had it happen with the hands free kit yet but I've only used that with a couple of important calls so I could just have been lucky.

now the fact that the same sorts of problems are happening with a new phone make me think this could be network related but the issue is different with the replacement (doesn't just affect 3G). What do you guys think, have I just been unlucky twice or are N95s generally a bit ropey like the N73 was? I know other guys with N95s and both seem happy enough.

Has anyone else had such issues with N95s?

PS to add insult to injury, I'm without a broadband connection currently so this is my only web connection

PPS to add further insult, I was on hold for 1hr 35mins to orange on the "my handset has developed a fault" line. No answer. I only hung on that long because I was doing other stuff with their music on loudspeaker. I guess the guys all went home but forgot to clear down the queue! (this was from 8.50 to 10:25ish)

I'm going to try them again tomorrow at more sociable hour but I'm not a happy bunny at them currently 😞

Kind regards,
Alasdair

(yes it is he of the Computer Shopper mag Symbian column of old... hi Ewan! drop me a PM if you're still based in edinburgh, I'm working up this way now)

I'm on .18 firmware btw, orange UK don't yet appear to provide the .26 but I doubt it could fix problems as fundamental as the ones I'm seeing?
