N95 + Firmware Upgrade

19 replies · 6,310 views · Started 14 June 2007

Well... My N95 gets delivered 2morros

and before I even do anything I'm going to update the software

by changing the product code, which one should I use for UK Plum N95?

Will this also get rid of all the O2 stuff?

Anyone had any problem with O2 by updating the software? like internet video calls etc etc?

Chris

Also anyone got any website with cool apps for N95?

also is there any software i can uninstall to free up memory?

mate, first start: Google. I think I am not allowed to post links here, but I found a tutorial which was absolutely great. never upgraded a firmware more easily. in this tutorial you find the codes needed.

i've looked up with the tag: "how to debrand N95" then this tutorial came up.
i've finished it in less than 5 minutes, took a lot more than that because when i ran the software update (program from nokia) it had to download it from the internet, my connection is not that fast.

my phone was full of vodafone crap and now it's clean and happy, managed to free up about 10mb and unlock all the features.

The o2 stuff as you say will be a theme, the start up animation and o2 bookmarks..........thats all.

And before you change any codes, you should check the NSU first to see if there's an update there.

funny you mention that because when i changed the phone code and ran NSU, it said my phone software was up to date, but it wasn't, it was the vodafone firmware with a non-vodafone firmware ID, but NSU gave me the option to reinstall it if I wanted, so that was how I managed to update software.

by the way: when following tutorial instructions, always read users' comments, they always add precious bits of information which is very useful.

Hi Chris

im awaiting my 4th Nokia N95 on 02 network
read my recent post my friend!
im on the online tariff

please email me when u receieve your phone and tell me if your N95 has that annoying loose wobbly slider and annoying high pitch noise
hopefully yours will be perfect!
get me at

im really annoyed mate!

have had terrible luck with my handsets 😡

I believe that this could well be the tutorial that SlakerBoi is referring to: the forum won't let me post a link so just go to Google and type in "how to de-brand a Nokia N95" - it should be the first result that pops up [nokiablog], I used it to help me de-brand my Plum T-Mobile N95 a few days ago and it worked a treat!

I to would recommend reading the comments at the bottom of the aforementioned page; although I didn't as I was so keen to get on with de-branding that I totally missed them! All went well but they do mention some very good points that you should take into consideration, I wished I had after reading them.

The product code I used was EURO1: 0536062, I believe that this is the generic product code for Plum N95 handsets, also don't forget to make a note of your original product code should you need to change it back.

This one? http://clear-nokia.blogspot.com/2007/05/nokia-n95-debranding-guide.html

Ok i'll let you know...

My partner has N95 already and it has a wobbly slider :/

but does work alright, but i know what you mean, does feel a bit like its gunna break any minute.

Well DHL messed up and said they didnt pickup my phone, but they did according to O2... so will be monday now 😞 even though O2 paid them 19.99 for next day :/

02 doesnt pay dhl 19.99 , the warehouse that deals with the phones has links with dhl , e.g they partially own em ,

mine came today though.

Hi guys..

Nice forum btw 😊

I've just got myself an N95 on O2 (but seems to be unlocked) and want to update the firmware as it still has the original (?) version on 10.0.0.18 or whatever, of course the Nokia Service Updater says its the latest version for my model/phone. I've tried using the NSS utility with and without a patched dll but it still refuses to connect/find my phone. Clicking on the Search for devices button just freezes NSS. Nokia PC Suite sees and interacts with it fine.

PS: I'm on windows vista, is this the problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

first of all, install Nokia PC Suite - it came with the CD obviously - then plug phone and select PCSuite Mode - now run NSS and follow instructions to change product code. when it's done, just close NSS and run Nokia Software Update - also known as NSU.

a hint: restart pc after installing NSS.

in the tutorial (which link is listed above) the most important part is actually the users' comments. follow it word by word and you will be alright.

😉

If you actually read my post, you'd see that i've already installed and successfully used the Nokia PC Suite. I've also followed those user' comments without any success.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Michael

NSS doesn't work properly with Vista (yet). But it can be made operable. Do this: Right click on the NSS icon, select properties, compatibility, check the 'run this program in compatibility mode for:' box and choose Windows XP (SP2) from the dropdown list, check disable visual themes in the box below. Click OK.

Should work now.

hi i was using nss with nokia updater on xp and had no probs, i reloaded all the nss stuff on my new laptop which runs vista and its all gong to rat $h!t.

nsu wont detect phone, nss dos;nt run.

have to do it all on the mother in laws xp machine which runs fine.

according to the nss owners the next version will be vista friendly.........stil waiting.

any tips to get this running will be welcomed, tried running as administrater, uninstalled, reinstalled etc etc etc...but no, wont work

mate, I am using vista here... i did everything just as told on the tutorial, actually in the middle of thing i thought i was going to have any problem due to doing it on vista but I didn't. as soon as i installed NSS i restarted pc, got back, plugged phone, waited for pcsuite to find it, ran NSS, drivers installed, NSS read it normally, changed code, saved and closed it. ran NSU and it did the job ok.

are you sure it isn't a USB port problem? have you tried on another PC? i'm quite sure vista has nothing to do with that this time. i'm no microsoft big fan but USB i yet haven't had any problem here with nokia stuff.

hardware used to debrand phone: acer laptop and 2.0 usb port.

I may be a bit off topic here but I now actively avoid buying anything online that uses a 'courier' service.

I bought something off eBay which Amtrak 'delivered'. This involved them turning up with no notice when I wasn't in, leaving a card saying they'd be back the next day, didn't turn up then (after I'd waited in the next day) then turning up the day after (when I wasn't in) and leaving another card saying they'd send the item back to the sender if it wasn't picked up in 2 working days. This subsequently involved a 130 round trip for me the next day, to their 'local' depot to be moaned at by their 'customer service' assistant because their driver hadn't bothered to write the consignment number on the card.

When I complained I was told the problem was due to a 'timing and location' issue. I dared asked what, exactly, that meant, and was curtly informed the driver was late because he couldn't find his way and had to go home before delivering. Also told not to bother them again as the sender was their customer, not me.

I'd now prefer to buy something from a company using a blind donkey with a carrot tied to the bonnet of its van as a delivery option. At least there's a random chance it'll get there in the end.
