Windows Media Player Network Sharing

hey guys

I have seen some discussion over stream media over home network using some weird programs and very confusing information about upnp.

Surfing net I saw somewhere I can't recall some info saying that it is possible to make N95 to access media shared by Windows Media Player.

Is it? Anyone saw anything about it?

The N95 does not support direct play over UPNP. Its not a fully fledged UPNP device, so you will annoyingly have to copy the files over first. Nokia really dropped the ball here.

that's what i read on an older thread.

the discussion ended without solution as SimpleCenter doesn't stream media straight to player unless you copy them into the phone before playing.

someone said with SymSMB was nearly the same thing....

I am not that sure yet, but something tells me it's not that hard to do... maybe the network sharing feature from media player hasn't much caught yet to make people realise its potential...

idea is that very old one: roam the house listening music from computer wirelessly. i have a zune, which has wireless capabilities but ms hasn't had the decency to unlock such feature - if they'll do some day - so while it doesn't come music on nokia would be good - if i could listen from pc, not storing files on memory card.

Thats what i have been doing with my T-Mobile MDA for over a year, if you have a Windows Mobile device you are laughing, but the N95 simply can not in any way direct stream. It's actually quite simple to implement direct streaming UPNP, there are many many devices on the market that do (including most games consoles now). It's a massively expanding market, but until Nokia upgrade the firmware for it (unlikely - there is not potential profit in it, unlike deals with Google for streaming youtube stuff) OR a third party developer comes up with solution, but if you have taken good look at the current state of Symbian development you will realise that even more unlikely.

I have research this for hours/days, im sorry but it's not happening 😞

something just occurred to me:

my pc is running IIS and i have my music folder on it, all the other pcs in the house (i share with two other mates) have access to it via a 192.168.0.100/music folder (where .100 is my pc and music, obviously the music folder) i've created playlists on the root folder but they can also browse files.

while typing this i just thought i should have tried to play single file with N95's realplayer because it has streaming capabilities, but I am focussed on forcing it to play songs from a playlist - or am I asking too much?

if there was another music player for N95 with streaming capabilities, able to read any of the standard playlists at the moment (m3u, pls, wpl, zpl) my problem would be resolved.

honestly i gave up looking for music players, all of them are bad as hell from interface to funcionality... any suggestions?
