hm, i checked later this evening and saw world gen 2...i think that was the last one.
ok, updated today and here is what i have found thus far:
start up speed much improved
splash screen much clearer
speed dail thumbnails not pixelated
browser speed improved drastically
key lock on by default
walkman play button locked now
generally faster phone
hope this helps Mark..
i updated, i like the auto-lock feature. what is your RAM after reboot? mine was 21.8
Hi,
After updating to the R9G007 firmware yesterday, I now get 21.1Mb RAM upon a startup. This is a little less than the previous F/W, but hey, I have to say this one seems pretty damn good. I was typing on my W950i on the last post, so now I am on the PC, I will flesh out my findings.
1. Phone Speed / Browser Speed.
Where I live, I get pretty poor 3G signal access, and on previous firmware versions, the browser was very very slow. I ditched the internal Opera browser for the excellent Opera Mini. Well, after updating yesterday, I find that the internal browser absolutely flys now. It was responsive and quick to navigate and pages were served quickly.
One aspect that seems to have changed is that the browser now seems to get sluggish when you visit and use a page with a lot of forms content (i.e. like this page) and the onboard keyboard started to act very strange indeed.
In addition to this, the phone just seems to be a little faster at opening menus and options etc.
All in all, a good step up in performance.
2. Phone Startup Speed.
The phone now starts up much faster. Previously the phone would typically start up in about 1min, but now from the intial splash screen and progress bar pop up, mine starts in about 20-30seconds. This is a major improvement, since the phone still needs a reboot every couple of days to sort out the GPRS and 3G connections that just seem to stop working.
3. Phone Splash Screen.
On previous firmware versions, the splash screen (for generic world n.) seemed fuzzy and pixelated, but this seems to be corrected in this version. Much crisper look and smoother edges. Not much I know, but provides a warmer feeling about the quality of the phone overall.
4. Speed Dial Icons.
When you went into the old speed dial app, when you added a speed dial, the picture (photo) associated with the contact would look very compressed and pixelated. This has now been fixed.
What has not been fixed, is when you dial a speed dial, the picture pops up and is still very pixelated.
5. Phone Locks.
Automatic phone lock seems to be set to ON, by default, and this I think is a welcome addition. I have an official SE belt carry case, and sometimes when I put the phone in, it will dial a number!!!
Secondly, the play button on the side of the phone now seems to be locked when key lock is activated. This again is great, as I have a couple of times gone to put my phone away in the case, hit the button and fill my office with music!!! Not good!!!
6. New Payments Entry in Security.
New menu item added to the Security section in Control Panel, but for what is it for, I have no idea whatsoever!!!
7. Volume.
I think there is a slight (and I mean slight) increase in the volume of the Walkman player.
That is all I have found so far, but for me, the one thing that still causes me most problems have not been fixed. Firstly, the GPRS and 3G connections just seem to stop working after a day or so, and I either need to reset the phone or switch the radio's off and back on, not a major problem, but always seems to happen when I need to quickly use a data connection.
Finally, the IMAP support for SSL / TLS connections still does not work for two of my email accounts. This for me is a major problem, and I am going to trial a Nokia E61 shortly, which seems to work ok.
Shame if I go to the E61, as I think the W950i is probably one of the most rounded phones out there, and most of what it does, it does well.
Brgds,
Mark.

How do I determine what type of phone I have got? I think I saw it when I updated to R9F011 but when I try the SEUS, it says my software is up to date.
Thanks,
Michael
Hi Michael,
It will depend on the branding of your phone. For instance, if you have a Vodafone version of the W950i, these networks do not always have the latest firmware updates since they take them from SE, and "test" them inhouse to ensure they work with their network software.
So, even if the generic firmware is released, until your network provider tests the new version, you will only ever be able to update to the last tested version for your network operator.
I had this problem, and I managed to de-brand my phone to a generic firmware, and I can update as needed.
Anyway, first thing, look at the following URL:-
hxxp://uiq3.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/CDA/W950i
This shows you the latest firmware versions by operator etc.
Then, go to your phone, at the standby screen and click more, then status and you will be able to see the CDA of your phone.
I have 162014/1 which is 'World Generic 1'. I think you will probably have one of the others listed at the URL link.
If you do have a branded version, there are ways to de-brand your phone, but be aware
IF YOU DE-BRAND YOUR PHONE - YOU WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY
Basically, debranding allows you to change the CDA from your existing one, to 162014/1 (World Generic 1), so that next time you run SEUS, you'll pull down the latest firmware.
Hope this explains and helps,
Mark.
Hi Mark,
My CDA is 162017/30 which isn't even listed! I think I remember from the SEUS update that it is a French version of the phone. French was also the only language alternative to English and there is a French sticker on the side.
I bought it on Ebay out of Hong Kong so the warranty is probably questionable anyway.
Will investigate changing the CDA as it is probably worth getting on the mainstream firmware path.
Thanks for your answer - very comprehensive!
Cheers,
Michael
Used KKClient to change the CDA and have successfully upgraded to R9G007.
A couple of comments:.
1. I had previously installed the trial of Ericsson Mobile Organiser which provides a push email service including calendar and contact updates. Before the firmware upgrade only the calendar and contacts worked but now everything works perfectly😊
2. The web browser no longer has any of the bookmark options in the 'more' menu. Fortunately I remembered that [2] lists your bookmarks and [9] allows you to bookmark a page but it is strange that these menu items have disappeared😞
Apart from that, everything works fine.
Cheers,
Michael

In the UK and on a pay monthly O2 plan.
Any ideas?
Hi Avo,
As you will see from Mark Walsham's post below, there are a number of different w950i software variants indicated by the CDA identifier, each of which has different upgrade paths and levels.
A comprehensive list can be found at uiq3.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/CDA/W950i.
Your phone is the O2 UK version and the latest release of software is R9EC001.
In order to get the latest SW version, you will need to change your software variant to CDA 162014/1 or World Generic 1. This is not a trivial nor risk free exercise but I have done it myself without any problems.
The Sony Ericsson Update Service will then recognise your new software variant and implement the upgrade accordingly.
Cheers,
Michael
however, if you've got a Vista PC, sony ericsson S/W updates are not supported until September for W950i 😉

I know there is newer firmware versions than mine, but I can't update my phone. I updated my phone few months ago. but now when I run SE update service and connect my phone it says that your phone is up-to-date.
I tried it many times. I master reset my phone and formatted my 4gig memory, changed my internet connection and windows, but again : "Update not available. your phone is up to date."
What can I do?
