n95 on 02 - HELP part 2

is ti just me or anybody else got a new phone delivered in the last week/10 days that is unusable?

my second replacement, with official v11 on board from 02, keeps going dead, turning off, restarting, freezing, dropping wifi, ....

i avoided to install anything on this, done all the hard resets, but nothing change

the girl from o2 said that if i had problems with the third, i should opt for another phone, i replied i may opt for another network!!!

if it carries on like this i may be on the way of the other user with 5 replacements!!!

ps i wonder if i'm getting his/their phones!!!!

I've had mine less than a week, and installed about 5 applications on it.

It's crashed a couple of times, and it does get a bit sluggish when there are a lot of applications running... but you get that with any computer. Apart from that, it's very reliable, with none of the other issues you describe.

I'm on Vodafone UK with V11.0.026. My guess is either you are unlucky, or the O2 firmware is dodgy.

SL

I recieved my o2 n95 on Monday. I charged it around 18hrs and started using it yesterday morning.

After a day and a bit of heavy use, I have no problems at all with it.

No freezing, restarting or crashing. Voice calls fine. GPS locked on within about 2 mins. Installed around 10 apps with no problems. Am yet to try wifi.
Slider intact and not wobbly (although only 2 days in!)

Mine shipped with v11 firmware.

Overall, a happy bunny. I just really, really wish o2 would come up with a decent data usage package.....

Oh, and the battery is shocking! But I was expecting that anyway.....

I had one delivered from them yesterday and the same problems. Its FW v11 that came on the handset, the wi-fi dropps when surfing (am going to test on another network as mine is quite slow so may be that), also it is very sluggish, crashes and needs resetting to use it again.

Within 2 minutes of playing with it yesterday 😊 I had to reset it has it froze. Upon restarting it I went into the main menu and the phone had took everything out of the office, apps and tools folders and put them all on the main menu. The camera icon had been sent to a folder called demo and the tool folder had duplicated😮

I tried a hard reset but found this didn't do anything so I ended up going onto the Nokia wesite to look which folders the icons went in and moved them all manually.

Also when a program stops responding like on old S60 phones I hold down the menu button and it loads the task manager to close the apps. When I try and close an app it takes ages (up to 5 minutes) to close or just freezes.

Another thing that wouldn't load yesterday was the download folder, I had previously in the say added the catalog, but last night I tried to load it and it kept freezing. This morning it was fine and worked, until I loaded an app called EurWeather which installed and worked fine for about 2 minutes and then froze and I had to reset.

Do you think will the next FW update change much on the phone or shall I send it back now and hope for a replacement that works

Network branded firmware variants appear to be quite unreliable compared to the Generic Nokia unbranded FW.

My recommendation would be to change your product code to Euro-1 using NSS, then reapplying FW V11 using NSU. You will end up with a totally reliable Generic firmware.

Generic FW V12 is due out in a few weeks and will almost certainly NOT be available on any of the Network variants for weeks if not months after the generic release.

Even then, it will be b*stardised by the networks into yet another bug-ridden unreliable mess.

i've personally done all that, but the phone just can't keep itself on. i was just wondering if it was a bad batch, as this is the second replacement and nothing changed from the first one. what i think is that it must be some problem with the power as it does not seem to give much problems when on the mains.

Another big problem is that it switches itself off when sliding open or close....

Unfortunately people at o2 does not seem to understand....

Touch wood, I've not had any real problems with my N95 from O2.

The only time its restarted itself, is when plugged into my unofficial third party in-car charger for some reason. Any other time, it behaves itself pretty well.

had enough of the second, i'm waiting for the 3rd tomorrow. cross fingers

funny enough it is only me experiencing this.....

I would tend to agree you are receiving handsets from a bad batch. If the generic Euro-1 FW doesn't solve your problems, then it points to a fault.

If your O2 handset is unlocked, could you test the handset with anonther network's SIM card? If not, could you try setting the handset to use GSM ONLY mode in case the O2 3G reception is part of the problem...?

i tried with an italian sim and it worked (with the sim) but the problems were the same. just tried now with gsm but no luck -

i popped to the nokia center in angel, london and the guy knew nothing about this problem or at least nobody has taken the phone back for this reason just yet.

fortunately i spoke to a great o2 guy, and after gently asking him for my puk code so i could migrate to another network (i have something like 3 mobiles with o2..) he aggreed for a third replacement - i'll keep you posted tomorrow.

Im on my second handset at the moment.

The first one kept cutting out on calls 😞

Havent really used it much for calls as of yet.. but it keeps resetting itself on that crap maps program.

Im going to check out how it works on calls later .. if it keeps dropping I might just switch from Nokia altogether!

Im on o2.

My Firmware is;
V 11.0.026
17-04-07
RM-159
Nokia N95 (65.01)

Ive just been on the Nokia site and its saying this is the latest one?

Is the one on the Nokia site the generic one I keep hearing about?

What would happen if I put this firmware on my handset? Would it differ much from the o2 one that is on there now?

And would it void my warrantee or change my rights if the generic firmware still causes problems and I need to send it back?

Any advice muchly appreciated

Thanks in advance for any help 😊

No, you have a FW variant - Probably O2 branded.
Change your product code to Euro-1 using NSS then run NSU and reapply V11 FW, you will end up with generic unbranded reliable firmware.

i have to say that with euro1 fw my phone was actually more stable then the 02 version, even if i'm talking about 20 crashes at day against 10/12.......

ps received my 3rd half hour ago, no problems this time and i may be a happy n95 bunny

thanks anyone

There MUST be something else going on here. My phone crashes maybe once a month - most often after using TomTom or Route66 GPS apps.

Either the O2 network/SIM is causing a problem or O2 have taken delivery of a very large batch of faulty handsets.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

How much different is this to the o2 software? What are the actual differences?

And would it void my warrantee or change my rights if the generic firmware still causes problems and I need to send it back?

And finally.. where can I get a guide to do this.. and more importantly.. somewhere where the firmware is reliable and genuine.. dont want to get any malware on my handset!

Thanks again :icon14:

When you do a flash with NSU, there's 3 files that get applied to the handset.

1. The firmware file. Exactly the same on every variant of that FW version
2. The language file. Hopefully this one speaks for itself.
3. The user memory file. This is the one that has the network branding, disabled functionality, and any extra bundled apps.

Technically using NSS to change the product code would void your warranty. It's only a problem if the Nokia Engineer bothers to check the code when the handset is handed in for repair. My advice would be to change the product code back to the original one (printed on the label behind the battery) immediately after upgrading the FW. You then have plausable deniability if asked why the FW is generic and not branded. Remember to change it back to Euro-1 next time a FW is released tho or NSU will either say there's no update available or even apply the network branding back to your handset (if your network has approved the new FW).

One of the sticky N95 threads has all the info you require on using NSS and NSU.

Someone feel free to correct me if I have missed anything from the above.

Thanks 😊

One more question - If I update from the Nokia site with an update using pc suite.. wont that get rid of the o2 branding whilst keeping my warrantee intact and without have to change the product code?

The only way to de-brand is to first change the Product Code before upgrading the FW, and that invalidates the warranty.
