Hi Guys i need sone advice on VOIP.
I just debranded my orange phone for the latest software and the use of VOIP. Much better and faster. I installed Truphone but my question is is it free to phone anywhere with VOIP? And is there anyother VOIP software as good as or better than Truphone?
As well as the VOIP function can you the experts tell me what other benefits i can get installed as ive got rid of all the orange junk.
Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Truphone is currently free to use. If you check out their website, you will see that it is currently free to call a significant number of landline (and some mobiles) globally. However this is a short term introductory offer, after which you will have to buy credits to use it. However it will always be free Truphone to Truphone. On top of that, you have to consider access points to use the program. Providing you're not using a commercial hotspot, WiFi is generally free. 3G however is down to your network provider.
I've got v3 of Truphone installed and have seen a noticeable decrease in the N95's battery life! Truphone v3 seems to totally drain it in very fast... is it just me or has anyone else experienced it?

I've got the new v3 installed as well and can't say I've noticed any difference. But then, it's not permanently connected, as I don't grant it access to my 3G network, and only use it when within WiFi, so that could be why. That said, I had it connected to my Home WiFi over the w/e and din't notice any difference in battery life. So maybe it's the 3G aspect that is killing yours (assuming you've set it up that way).

Yes, I've noticed a shorter battery life since installing version 3 as well.
I now disable it when I don't need it, but it would be so much nicer not to have to!
hey guys i just finding out about VOIP and free calls lol
just seen truphone and it sounds interesting question for you users.
if a call charge to a non free country is 0.065 inc VAT then a 60min call is
£3.90p? or £0.3.9p?
also i take it truphone is limited to a simcard as it needs a mobile number and cannot be used without sim like other VOIP operators?
cheers

Yeah... that's the WLAN connection, it absolutely sucks the battery dry.
I keep it disconnected from the network unless I specifically want to make a call.

It is tied to the sim (and hence to the GSM number) but that can be changed by emailing customer support. I am changing my GSM number next week (porting my old number) and they said just email them and they will change it.
It needs to be tied to the sim in some way as it can forward VoIP calls to your GSM number if you are outside WiFi range.
I installed it today on my N95 and it works well. The only hiccup so far is that it is meant to integrate with Google Talk but I can dial in to Google Talk over VoIP but not out back to the phone. I am looking into this one.
Ok, so the price rate 0.065 is just 0.65p so 60mins would be £3.90p? correct me if i'm wrong please.
Also whats the fair use policy? is it worth topping up because i'v seen other VOIP that allow you topup £7 and get free calls for 3 months which has 300mins per week fair use policy and good rates on non free countries

I think if v3 is working correctly, then the battery life is unchanged. However, it seems to cause mine to hang every so often and then the whole thing gets noticeably warm and the battery goes in no time. Keeping an eye on it and loads of restarts is the only solution at the moment but hopefully they'll have the bugs ironed out soon. Given the N95's difficulty in staying connected to WiFi, I think it's not really surprising that the Truphone app gets upset every so often: I wonder if it's any better on the E-series handsets but nobody seems to be able to enlighten me.
the v3 runs at start up, and somewhere in the options you can find a way to disable it - basically it runs on the background even if you are not connected to the wifi - i unistalled because it caused crashes very frequently on the phone and sometimes i could not disconnect from wifi, in the end of the day it's only the sip configuration that you need!!!
in a month i'll check it back
