Power Saving Tips - Any more?

11 replies · 6,365 views · Started 04 July 2007

I need to try and conserve power for as long as possible - going away for a 3 day weekend, so need to make the phone last as long as I can.

Aside from buying another battery (which I've done), the following is a list of the things I have found which should help.

Lower Light Sensor setting
Lower Power Saver timout to 1 minute.
Lower Light Time-Out to 5 seconds.
Turn off WLAN Scanning.
Turn WLAN TX power to 4mw (this prob won't help if not using WLAN anyway).
Turn off 'Dual Mode' to save phone swapping between 3G and GSM if 3G coverage is poor.
Turn off Bluetooth when not in use.
Make sure applications are not running in the background (hold down the Menu Key to get a list of running apps).

Rather than switching the phone off at night and then back on in the morning which I've found consumes a fair bit of power, Switch the phone into 'offline' mode at night.
Avoid USB connections (and don't leave connected for longer than required).

Anyone got any other tips/advice?

Thanks

Turn off bluetooth
Avoid USB connections (and don't leave connected for longer than required)
Make sure apps are properly exited so they aren't still running in the background

The usb thing I found to be the biggest drain of all. I left mine connected after transferring some software and 4 hours later when I did unplug it, it was dead. It had been full before I started!

3Shirts,

Thanks, I've added them to my list above. I always have Bluetooth off anyway when I'm not using it.

As I'll be away, I wont be using USB connections, but its a usefull tip for others.

The draining via USB really interests me. I can't quite figure out why it should zap so much power if the connection is inactive.

Why, why, why didn't Nokia include trickle charge via the mini-USB port. For me, it would have been the icing on the cake for an *almost* perfect phone 😊

I agree, it doesn't even have to charge it fully, but it would be good if it could at least provide power while the phone is connected so when you unplug it, it has the same power as when you plugged it in. At the moment I am reluctant to connect the usb unless I also have it connected to the charger

I dont have an option to turn wireless off and on ?!?!

Ive got a connection manager.. and wireless searching whilst looking for connections.

Is there something wrong with my phone? 😞

You must do, on the today screen you should have the WLAN icon. It should say scanning, or WLAN scanning off. You just select it to turn off or on.

You can also change this in settings>connection>WLAN

Yesterday I discovered how truly poor the N95 battery is.

I was using it to make several phone calls, had surfed the internet for a little bit and had had bluetooth active. In the space of only a few hours I was down to one bar.

I do that kind of activity every day (plus at least 2 hours of listening to the radio or my music on the train) and it lasts the day with a couple of bars left. Either you have left wifi on, one of the other things above, or the battery is duff.

Do bear in mind it takes a couple of weeks for the battery to reach peak performance, there are several topics about that on this forum

Just had another look at it.

Under Tools>settings>connection?wlan

I only have the option to "show wlan when availability" which ive set to never.

Does anyone know why this is?

I dont use active standby. However switched it on just investigate more..

When Active Standby is switched on, there is the option to turn wlan scanning on and off on the screen at the front (if you know what I mean)

When on the wlan logo doesnt show though on this N95. which is more weird. sure on my N80 the logo shown when it searched for wlan networks.

strange..

no one else experience this?

That's the way it should be. When you've set it to never, it's 'never' searching for WLAN, so scanning is off. Therefore saving you battery.

On active standby, you can turn it off and on as you describe.
The wlan logo will only show when you've found and connected to a wlan.
If it's searching the blue aerial icon will have blue flashing radiating lines showing it's searching......
