What to replace my N80 with??

30 replies · 8,764 views · Started 05 July 2007

Hello, this is my first post, I have a Nokia N80 which is due for free upgrade this month but I am really struggling on deciding what to replace it with? To be honest I really like the N80 apart from 2 things, it's size and the battery life.

Requirements for the new phone would be as good a camera as the N80, the ability to add memory (for Mp3's) and I would like to still be able to use Tomtom Navigator and Salling Clicker (over wifi) it also needs to have an FM radio. If I could get all that in a smaller, more battery efficient version of the N80 I would be very happy!!

Suggestions please.......

I don't know mate, personally i'm not gonna get an N95, they're just not that much different from the N80, and the screen is poo compared to the N80.

Hold out for a while longer and see if anything else good is announced.

Battery life is almost the same. There's no Nokia with all the features from N80 which is also smaller and with better battery. Perhaps N95.

Just had another look on the Nokia website, it looks like there isn't anything else coming out to match the N80, anyone got any info on new nokia's? I really want to stick with them as I really like them, the one time I had something else I regretted it so much I bought myself out of the contract!!

the woman I had an interview with a couple of months back said there was gonna be a cool one coming out in Q4 07 I think... Id have to search for my post to see what she said, cause Ive slept since then.

But as some others have said the N95 is a similar phone for functionality but not much of a difference. I wont bother tieing myself into another contract for an N95 when I have an N80. Id bide my time.

You could always get a iphone HAHAHAH 😉

I think he wants and *up*grade.

Anyhow, the only one to match the N80 out there is N95 and it has GPS and better camera, but not exactly slim nor a better screen or some huge upgrade.

If you want to ditch N80 at any rate, go for N95. But seeing both, I'm sticking with the 80. It's still the best punch per cubic centimeter.

perhaps a E65, photo quality in daylight is similar with the n80, size and slider are much more convenient, not sure if there is software to enable a radio in it

Might be time for a move to UIQ? The recently announced SE W960 might be the way to go. Certainly the specs suggest you don't lose much from the N80 and gain a whole lot more...

I was thinking of keeping the n80 but after it getting repaired under warranty its screen is getting faulty again. Not happy. Looks like i might have to send it in for repairs again or get a new phone.

N95 isnt a natural upgrade path due to the screen. I would like a larger and higher res screen. Also what happened to the gaming phones that Nokia were talking about? I wouldnt mind those if they are nice.

SE are getting some things very nice where Nokia's are weak. RAM and weak processor is something Nokia need to take care of. But SE get things like wifi(only b why?) wrong.

After use the N80, N95 screen seems poor... very poor. To surf the net, use mail for exchange, the resolution matters. So, I understand you... And only E70, with same screen seems for me an alternative, because have a way better battery, but without FM Radio, and a little more poor camera.
N80 (the only 80s series) is real unique... sadly, but N95 is something on side, and not a replacement... only my opinion, and i use both, but for my use N80 screen is away better.

I can agree with what has been said about the N95's screen resolution, and having heard about the battery life from a friend, I would consider the E70 an upgrade. It offers great battery life and a very good QWERTY-Keyboard, which - after some getting used to - is actually really fast and fine for writing forum entries, mails or instant messaging.
The problem is, the camera is not as good, and it lacks an FM Radio. If you can get over that, the E70 is a great package with what I consider the best compromise of size, weight, battery life and functionality.

Greetings,

Martin

And price😉
The FM Radio can be obtained with an headset like HS-6!

Oh, believe me that the E70 makesa good choice. The keyboard is great to use. I can type around 32-36 words per minute. The camera is very good, the noise inside pictures is almost inexistent and the snap is made real fast, even faster than in N70. The resolution is more than enough for printing on 10x15. Just as a sample, take a look the photo attached.

Yeah but i'd rather use an addon keyboard than a built in keyboard. E90 is impressive. Just want a true N80 replacement.

yes i do agree with the guys up there who thinks that N95 is not worth changing from N80. E90 perhaps? 😊

How on earth is the E90 a replacement for the N80!!! Remember my OP - things that are important to me are same functionality as the N80, size and battery life!!

Just to quantify this:
1) The size must be the same or smaller (although might consider a phone the saze of the N95 if it gave complete functionality).
2) The camera must be same or better.
3) Battery life must be same or better - we all know this one isn't going to be hard to achieve!!
4) Must be able to run my apps listed in OP, especially Saling Clicker and TTN6 - there would be no way that I would pay extra for route mapping AKA N95, also I believe you can't have speed camera POI's on the N95?

So if anyone has any info regarding a TRUE replacement for the N80 I would be most grateful!!

yeah, exactly. Its a bit of a dead thread this at the moment. Will have to wait and see what the next new releases bring you./

Tried out the N95. Its an excellent phone. Seems so stable and fast!

Only issue i have is the screen. It could be better but it makes better use of the screen than N80. You can use smaller fonts etc and see more on the screen. Phone seems very nice. Might get one.

Yeah for web browsing N95 screen is weak. But N80 has a tiny screen which isnt that much better in practice. N95 is also more stable.

Right now i am confused as some software have issues on N95! Any sign of N96?

Try Toshiba G900 - what a Screen...🙄

Bit more reading reveals it has issues etc. Plus i would be new to windows mobile. I dont know what other people's take on this is?

I think whatever you get make sure it hasn't got a ?@!$% pop port on the bottom.
I think my N80 is great - most of the time when it behaves (unlike today when the screensaver just wouldn't kick in until I powered it off and my battery was draining in a couple of hours), but my second pop port 'device' has half stopped working today - my car speaker charger. The speaker works, the charger has stopped. Add to that my headphone adaptor that came in the box.
I've given up hope of any more f/w updates - I don't fancy the risk of that breaking mid-way through as well 😞

Surely a windows mobile phone means you'll have to pay for TT again as it's a different platform. Or am I the only one out there who pays for stuff?!

By the time my 18 month contract ends, the mythical N81 or N82 may be out, I'm starting to think about abandoning my N80 then, assuming all my apps will move across for nowt...

The thing with me is also that I am currently on quite an expensive contract and I have been given the option to buy out of the contract as long as I upgrade and get a new one.... so need to find a suitable replacement sooner rather than later....

maybe you should just wait...

theres a leaked/hoax website at the moment, that looks like its an N95 keyboard, but 8GB phone... like rumoured N81.....

the webbo is http://www.070829.com/ which make a date of 2007 August 29th.

Rumour is a new model will be announced... as I mentioned that the nokia woman hinted to me... it would be a good improvement on the N80... :con? 😎 😮

Is it just me or is the website just doing an impression of what would happen if I gave my 14 month old my phone and a very large hammer..?
