P800 on Vodafone UK

15 replies · 3,805 views · Started 13 January 2003

Hi all,

I have obtained a P800 phone on SIM free inport and I want to use it with UK's Vodafone network.
For the life of me I cannot get the phone to work on GPRS. Normal data dialup connection works fine (ugh) but not the GPRS service.
Vodafone and Sony Ericsson UK are of no help as the phone is not yet realsed here. They say that there are some network "issues".
Has anyone successfully got this phone working in the UK on GPRS? and how?!?

Cheers

Dave

Thats why you shouldn't really buy import phones, not a great problem, but Vodafone (or other UK operators) my have to do some firmware revisions before it is released.

Which means you will have to get a firmware upgrade when the phone is released in the UK.

As they are still in the 'testing' phase I guess we won't know until it's released which software version it is released with.

Have you tried the following link which can send the settings directly to your phone : -

http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?template=SP1&B=ie&PID=9940&LM=SD_VPF&noredir=1

And I guess you have GPRS enabled on your account, sorry cant be more of a help but as you might of guessed I dont have a P800 yet being in the UK.

If you follow the above link it dose let you enter wap, uk, vodaphone, P800, Vizzavi GPRS or Vodafone Vizzavi ( first one would be my choice ), enter your mobile number and hopefully Bobs your uncle

This should do it:
Edit the GPRS account, klick advanced and set Adress to internet.vodafone.net
Works for me.

Ok, stupid question. Does this mean I can get on the Internet when I would have a Vodafone live subscription? Or is Internet 'firewalled' so to speak? I don't care a flying thing about this Live stuff, I just want to get on the Internet. So it's quite important for me to know if this works or not. Can't find it anywhere on the Vodafone site.

Thanx!

Well, I dont know anything about Live. What you need is a subscription that says GPRS. (Otherwise you always try CSD/HSCSD....). It shouldn't be "firewalled", it just the operators "gateway" on the way to internet (for some operators you need to fill in the APN, for others you don't. For Voda UK, you need to.

Does this mean that I also need to enter a username and password for the internet.vodafone.net settings? I have tried it and it would seem that Im getting WAP version's of webpages. Is that correct?

It's my boss's phone, so all I know is that he had to have it regardless of cost 😃
Thanks for the info guys.
Is there also a vodafone SMTP server I can use? I assume that I can access any pop3 box I can access through the internet generally?

Dave

try:

APN: internet
user: [email protected]
password: user
IP: blank
DNS: blank

you can also try apn of wap.vodafone.net

the smtp server is smtp.vizzavi.co.uk

also, have you tried to have the settings sent by sms from the SE site? Maybe the settings for a t68i will work.

am I missing something, did anyone bother to try what I posted?, if you go to the link I posted it should send the settings to your phone so you dont have to enter anything as long as you have called up vodaphone and changed your account to be gprs enabled.

Vodafone Live uses GPRS, that's not the problem. I'm jsut afraid that they have disabled access to the internet, perhaps to crank up their revenue on there own Live 'services', which you have to pay for.

I could not access full HTML with vodafone UK with GPRS, I was using T68i and bluetooth card in my laptop.

After speaking to Vodafone support they said that my GPRS account was had wap access only and they had to change the APN so that I could access full HTML. There was'nt an added cost

I would have tried it, but I already have and it got me no where fast.
I guess part of the problem here comes when wanting to roam in other countries on GPRS and not knowing the settings, so I have to fall back on modem connections.
Frankly having played with the P800 Im not all that impressed with the device due to the amount of time it has taken to setup. Partly that is due to not having the correct info, but also that the interface and configuration preferences sucks.

Dave

i got my p800 sim-free and am using it with my vodafone connection...
here is what i did...
got to the section that autoconfigures the phone for vodafone live
and got it to send me the configuration for the t68i...
got it and it works fine.... (not that you have to ask vodafone to activate gprs and mms for you)....

I can access the internet via gprs... check emails etc.

HOWEVER.... i have a problem using tipicMe and the vncViewer... none of those work... they don't appear to be connecting... although i ensure that the gprs connection is working beforehand..

Dial 191 and follow the options to speak to someone in the Data section, they will SMS the correct settings for the Voda network and P800 direct to your phone.

They did mine 😊
