I've done this before and I think it's worked..

I seem to remember on my old 6600 it showed a progress bar and took a good few minutes to finish. When I do it on my N80, N95 etc, it doesn't show any progress bar and phone starts up in practically the same time.. I know it's done something as it asks for the date/time.

A lot easier then trying to hold down those keys is to use these codes

*#7370# Full Factory Reset
*#7780# restore factory settings which will leave user Data intact.

hey after formating the pone U might need the software to restart it, do you have it for N95
my phone is not restarting
