I'm tried to get some clear info on exactly how assisted GPS works and the data amount involved (if any). I just called Vodafone UK to find out what data charges I had incurred since I upgraded last night.
Unfortunately they work on a 2 day back log so wont know for a couple of days, does anyone else know, alternatively can someone else on a different network try contacting their customer support?

Costs will depend on your contract/tarrif. If you have a decent data bundle as part of your contract, you probably can use A-GPS for free.
I don't know how often the network transfers positional data with A-GPS but the quantity of data each time must be very small, only a dozen bytes or so.
In either event, A-GPS is not a replacement for proper GPS Route Navigation using either the Internal GPS Receiver or a Bluetooth GPS Receiver. It is probably aimed more at a one-off 'where am I now' type query or very short routes with source and destination points both within a town or city.
AGPS works with GPS, but with antenna triangulation, to minimize the GPS error. Only a little amount of data is changed between network and phone, but the bill could be a surprise. So see your data plan and avoid surprises.
You can also use the "Log" app on the phone to see how much data has been transferred. If you know how much your operator charges for data, then you'll know the cost, too.
Agps typically uses about 6kbs of data so it's not going to have a huge effect on your bill
Didn't even realize it did use data haha

6Kb but how often?
Most networks charge 1.50 per Mb so 6Kb per minute would soon add up.
6Kb per hour would be more affordable.
6kb every time you start the gps unit with the agps option ticked. If you used it 4 times every day that would be about 700kbs or about a pound on a 1.50/Mb plan.
(Agps is only used at startup to reduce the time taken for an initial fix)

Sorry, i dont understand your maths. How does 6kb X 4 = 700Kb? :con?
EDIT: i get you, you mean 4 times a day, everyday, for a whole month.

Thanks m8! I had mistakenly assumed A-GPS accessed the network all the time the GPS app was running.
