This can't be right - Three can TAKE AWAY E61 features like wi-fi because I'm PASG and not on a contract?
Please help - I am the proud new owner of a Nokia E61 that's locked into the Three network.
I got this phone mainly because I wanted push email and the wi-fi connectivity (and I really like Nokias) - BUT- because I am a PASG customer these features are locked out to me.
If I get the phone unlocked will this give me access to these features?
I am SO angry - would not even normally consider such guerilla tactics but I cannot believe that Three should have the right to effectively remove such key USPs from a handset because I won't sign up to a monthly deal.
I'm reeeally hoping someone would be kind enough to help me here - it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance...
Use NSS + NSU, flash the phone with a generic firmware and USE Wi-Fi.
I've never heard of this before. Have '3' confirmed this? The wifi has no bearing on the phone's network use. Indeed without a sim card wifi should still work.
If WiFi is blocked it would indicate a seperate version of the firmware also. What is your firmware version?
If your phone is still under warranty, flashing it with software not approved by '3' will invalidate it.
Thanks for the posts, although I don't understand the one about NSS and NSU but I will research what this means.
3 DID confirm it as I rang the customer services number to complain and they said that the E61 was only a contract phone so wifi would not work on it.
It seems that the whole firmware has been changed for 3 - the instructions in the Nokia booklet do not tally with what's in the phone menu.
So, 3 have got Nokia to change how the phone operates for them therefore forcing you to go on contract.
I am just unspeakably angry about the whole situation - it's not like I want to use a rival network on my new phone - I just want to use my OWN HOME WIFI!
Its because of that, I only use open phones, without any contract... I do what the phone can do, and not what operator wants.

Yes 3 do have their own branded firmware but it should not affect wifi, take it to your local 3 store if you have one and tell them you are having problems placing calls and ask for a firmware reflash, they should send it away and it will come back with the current firmware.
How did you get the phone? You state that three said

So I presume its an ex contract phone which you have put a PAYG sim in. If this is the case then WLAN will be enabled, if it doesnt work then either there is a problem with your router or a problem with the phone, contact whoever you bought it off an as them about it.
Thanks for all the posts - I'm giving up but just to let anyone who's interested know..
THREE HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THEY DO NOT SUPPORT WI-FI WITH THE E61 ON THEIR NETWORK
This phone was actually a handset upgrade that my boyfriend got on his Three contract for me. We both assumed that if I got a PAYG Three card I would be able to use it's features.
Obviously I was having probs so we tried it with my boyfriend's contract sim card - same menus, same prob, no wi-fi.
My boyfriend called the Three customer services tonight and their representative confirmed that an E61 from them WILL NOT have wi-fi connectivty.
We are disgusted and sending it back.
Three seem to always screw phones up with their software. I'd never get a phone off them.
3 saying they dont support wifi and their phone not supporting wifi are 2 different statements, send it back as faulty.
As smallboy says its a faulty phone so send it back for a replacement. 3's e61's DO have WLAN enabled, I got one only 2 months ago and it works fine. It is definitely faulty.
I have an E61 on 3 and the WIFI works fine - with my contract sim AND my pay as you go sim, never had a problem. Your handset is faulty, get them to replace it.
