USB nightmare!!

Hi all. Received my N95, unbranded & unlocked, this morning. All is ok with it, except for PC connectivity.

I am having a total nightmare getting it to reliably communicate with my PC. The problem appears to be with the USB connection being intermittant. Sometimes the phone is detected, sometimes it isn't Even when it is detected, it disconnects at random & frequent times. Trying to do a software update is a no-no as it just can't hold a USB connection for that long. I'm getting "USB device not recognized" messages here & there, and I'm tearing my hair out trying to get this working reliably. Oh, and this is happening identically on two machines, an AMD 3500+ desktop, and an hp Centrino laptop. Dodgy phone? Dodgy cable? Any ideas? :con? :con? :con? Cheers.

dodgy cable I reckon?

I used to get this on my old n73 with the old style data cable, but with my n95 and mini usb port it's been fine so far (touch wood).....

Hrm, seems weird, considering it came with a pukka DKE-2 cable. I'll contact the place I bought it from & see if I can blag another one out of them.

Well, looks like it was indeed the cable. I found another cable in my parts drawer (it came with a cheapo card reader) that is working like a dream.

Sooo, official Nokia cable = :icon13: , Unbranded cheapo cable = :icon14: .

Fingers crossed it stays working...I'm 10% through a firmware update 😮

Fortunately, the firmware update completed ok, & the "cheapo" cable continues to perform 100%. Another fella on the Nokia forums has had the same issue with the supplied official cable. I wonder if Nokia are cutting corners on these things, or maybe there's just the odd bad batch. Frankly, you'd think it's pretty hard to get a usb cable wrong.

I had the same issues with my 6280... the intermittent connection thing drove me insane....... so much so that i just ended up communicating via bluetooth to the PC.

Hope you can resolve the situation.

85% of the time = cable fault ..
its quite possible to have a dodgy usb cable - be wary of using a generic one without a longish phone end connector.

I've noticed using the leather case that the genuine nokie cable is fine but I have a usb hard drive cable that the phone end is just that much shorter - its prone to disconnections.

Of course YMMV😊
