My new E90 - How do I...?

11 replies · 7,557 views · Started 13 July 2007

Hi,

First off, I'm new on this forum. My greetings to all.
Second, I'm new to nokia communicators. The E90 is my first, although I've been a nokia fan for a long time.

Now to the real questions. Btw, if any of this has been answered before, do point me to the right place.

1. Standby icons.
I noticed that the number of standby icons are limited. 6 when the cover is closed. 8 when it is open. Is there any way to add more icons?

2. Application keys.
Is there anyway to re-assign the application keys? I specifically want the 'Web' key to start Opera Mini, instead of the built in browser. I know I can add opera mini to the standby icons, but I don't want to do that as I've got other stuff on my standby icons list. An alternative would be if I could add more standby icons, then I could add opera mini (plus other apps) there for quick access.

3. Email client.
Okay, this perhaps has more to do with my mail settings in the phone, instead of the phone itself. I have a 'standard' email account with a local provider. They use the standard pop3 and smtp servers. I can retrieve my mails just fine, but when I try to send, they get stuck in queue and never leave the phone. The e90 keeps asking me for my id and password, although I know that the smtp server does not require one.

An alternative for me would be to use gmail. However, I do not want to use the gmail client as it is limited (e.g. cannot attach stuff from my memory card) and doesn't seem to be E90 friendly (e.g. the app does not expand if I start it on the front screen and then open to view in the inside, bigger screen. Vice versa too). Is it possible to use the default nokia mail client with gmail? I tried using the normal pop3 and smtp config but it does not work.

4. Battery life
I read in reviews about how good this phone's battery life is. One reviewer (I now can't remember where from) mentioned that his battery easily lasted 3 days. I've had this phone for 3 days already, and my battery lasts no longer than 12 hours on a single charge. Ok, before I continue, let me just describe my usage:
- I play with the GPS a lot. Not that I actually need it. Its just too cool to have it on my phone and not show it off to every tom, dick and harry I come across  .
- I listen to a few (say 4) podcasts a day, sometimes video.
- usually connected to a WLAN, either at work, at starbucks, or home
- make about 5 to 6 calls, and maybe 10 to 15 sms per day. Actually, I'm just guessing here. Its prob a bit more.
- the mail client checks/downloads new mail every 1/2 hour. I'd be sending mail too, if I could get it to work (see point #3 above).

5. I'm looking for a fax solution. This phone doesn't come with a fax 😡 . Is there a reliable alternative - as in, one that I can use with this phone? I'm in Malaysia and businesses here are heavily dependent on faxing, even if we got good IT infra.

Any feedback / suggestion is welcome and much appreciated.

Thank you.
Nik.

3: Try using your network operator's SMTP server, instead of your email provider's (in case your operator only allows SMTP access to/through their server).

Hi replies as below ...

>>>there's a 3rd party app for s60 v2. The e90 is a v3 device and i have not seen any software yet.. Its also tricky as the e90 has dual displays so the software must know the screen width. Suggest you wait for something to come out specifically for the e90...

>>> Again, nope. Had a friend do a registry hack but his phone became unstable and was not that successful in my opinion.

>>> Yes as per other reply. Alternatively, You can also use outgoing mail masking. ie. use a yahoo smtp server with the right password, change the reply to address to be your original email. keep the inbox settings the same.

>>> If you turn off 3g (of course defeating it as a 3.5G device), i get 2.5 days life. I am down to max a day on 3G. I have blackberry on 24 hours, 1 or 2 podcast downloads, 15 email replies a day, 20 sms a day, approx 6 x 10 min calls. GPS is on only if i have extra battery and very bored going towards a desitinition where i have a charger waiting... 😊 I am also thinking of bringing the battery back to nokia. I goes from 2 bars suddenly to totally empty in matter of minutes on standby mode. THink i have a defective battery perhaps?

Hi aylmer,

Thanks for your feedback. To answer your questions:
>>> am also thinking of bringing the battery back to nokia. I goes from 2 bars suddenly to totally empty in matter of minutes on standby mode. THink i have a defective battery perhaps?

A hah! I'm experiencing the same phenomenon. My battery drains slowly from 7 bars to 3 bars. Then it just completely drops to one bar, and starts displaying the 'battery low' message. I, too, am thinking that I have a bad battery. I've had other nokia phones and have never had this problem.

>>> no fax solution unfortunately! Can you subscribe to 3G service and also have mobile fax in your country? I am in SIngapore and we can't do this. 😞 were you a 9300/9500 user?

Not sure about 3G with mobile fax. And no, I was never a 9300/9500 user. I did, at one point, want to buy the 9300i. This was earlier this year. Then I found out the Nokia were going to launch the e90, so I waited.

Cheers!

One more difficulty I've had is not being able to browse the net (or do anything internet related) via a WiFi connection and via a proxy. I've not been able to find any settings in the built in browser that allows me to key in the proxy IP so that the browser points to it to get out to the Net. So I'm assuming its a dead end, unless someone can prove me other wise.

If it is a dead end, are there any 3rd party browsers for the e90 that supports proxy servers?

If you have the backlight set to "Always On" in the setup menu of the Maps application it will stay on even when the phone is in your pocket. You might want to check that setting since it does impact battery life somewhat.

Hi Jowls,

Yup. I know about the backlight in Maps. Its set to be on only in navigation mode. Thanks for the tip anyway.

Cheers!

Hi all. I figured out how to configure this. I actually wrote step by step instructions in an ealier post, but some how the forum says I wasn't logged on, and lost what I wrote.

Don't want to retype it again, as I'm typing this from my e90. But its basically in the access point definition. Look under options | advanced settings and you'll find all the parameters to configure.

Cheers!

Nik.

Just an update. I managed to find out the settings for this too. If you have a gmail account, you can go to the customize screen and enable POP for your mails. Then configure smtp and pop on your e90. Note that gmail doesn't use the default ports, so you'll need to specify those as well on your phone. Finally, don't forget to enable SSL.

Cheers!

Hi Dragonboy,

Not sure I understand what you're asking. What do you mean by 'recommended route guidance'?
