hopefull some brainy person will be able to answer these questions for me.

ok,after installing loads of apps i upgraded the firmware and now they dont work,so i just want to delete everything from the memory card,i know how to format it but will i lose any of the nokia maps stuff.after i format it i want to flash the phone again to the latest firmware and start all over.once i do both will i still have the maps n stuff for the gps? dont fancy doing it if im going to lose it and not be able to get it back,i use route66 but id still like to have the original.also ive read you should do a hard reset while doing this,is that true and if so when do i do it.............before i flash the phone or after.

sorry if this thread is a little muddled up,know what im trying to say in my head but typing it is a different story lol.

Copy all the folders you want to keep and put them on your PC. Format your mem card. Backup your contacts with PC suite. Do the OS upgrade and then perform a hard reset. Reinstall all your apps to the phone (not mem card). Copy back the folders to the mem card and then restore your contacts.
Job done! A nice clean install.

thanks for the reply,ok what if there isnt any folders i want to keep from the memory card, would i just go ahead and format it? also, once its formatted does it still have all the folders in it i.e my videos, root, private? obviously they'll be empty afterwards or do i have to make them all myself again?

and also, why should i install apps to phone, any reason?

last thing, what about the nokia maps, will i lose all of it or do i get it all again after os upgrade?

Formatting the memory card using the phone will create all those folders again.

1. Well, why not?
2. Space consideration - the phone memory has about 140MB free when it's new (or just after firmware update), if you have a memory card, then it's just really the contacts, messages, and calendar entries which will use the phone memory, and usually they only take up a small proportion of that space. Rather than letting that space to go waste, why not put your applications on it and leave your memory card for more photos/music?
3. Performance - applications installed to the phone memory will generally load slightly faster than ones installed to the memory card.
4. Tidiness - in theory, apps installed to the memory card should still all work after a firmware update, which would be a compelling reason to use the memory card, but a lot of people's experience seem to suggest otherwise, so you often end up with dead apps which won't work and doesn't want to go away. Seeing that this convenience doesn't always work anyway, it'd be less messy to have all the apps on the phone memory; and when you update the firmware they definite disappear completely. Although you'll have to reinstall everything, I actually prefer this process as it's a more consistent approach.

The Maps application is part of the firmware so you won't lose that. All maps data are stored on the memory card so you'll lose that when you reformat, but you can easily download them again with MapLoader so I wouldn't worry about that. Any landmarks you've saved in Maps will disappear too - it might be possible to save them, but I'm not sure.

I believe the folder used by Nokia Maps are called Private/20001f63. Copying that folder back to the microSD after a format should restore your maps, at least in theory 😊

Hi,

There's no need to format your memory card after a FW upgrade. Just re-install any apps which no longer work, byt using PC Suite and the original SIS/SISX/JAR files.

In my experience, 100% of JAR apps need reinstalled, and about 25% of SIS/SISX apps need reinstalled.

Hopefully you can remember where you got all the affected apps from in the first place?
