Good N95 gone wobbly

30 replies · 7,902 views · Started 15 July 2007

Hey peeps, new user here although i have been lurking around for a while , great forum by the way.

Wonder if any one would have any advice my N95 that has developed a fault. 😊

I got my N95 off o2 in April as an upgrade at the end of my contract, I was sent a phone which had the slider practically hanging off , so i sent it back. The next N95 that arrived as a replacement had pixel errors on the screen...( line running through the middle).

I was then sent my third N95 which seemed ok so i kept it ...all these replacements were in the first week. However i am now finding that 3 months down the line the slider is becoming unbelievably wobbly , as each day progresses, I only use the phone for about four hours per day after i get in from work....

So my question is will i be entitled to have it repaired / replaced having had it for a few months and accepting it as ok in the first place

thanks in advance stu :icon14:

only 3 months ? send it back my friend, send it back

Tell us how you get on as i think im in the same situation as you. I'm not sure if 02 will give you replacement after 28 days, im pretty sure they send it for repair but let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the rapid response , ill be sure to give them a call to explain tomorrow, ill post back in this thread to let you know how i got on, a repair would be great , a replacement would be fantastic, we shall see....

thanks again :icon14:

Simple fix for slider here (spoken in spanish but its straight forward)

Done this myself and its fixed it a treat.

Lots of people have been sent several replcement phones with 1 wobbly slider after another and most networks will only replace it 3 times.

Link here h**p://w*w.youtube.com/watch?v=BaEVJeRE8iU

I'd agree with Navs here. Sending the phone back is only likely to end you up with another loose slider.

I fixed mine following the instructions mentioned above. I know we shouldn't have to do this with a flagship phone. But, for ten minututes effort it's worth it.

Can you explain the slider problem you.re experiencing please. Is it the well known loose and clicky slider problem or is this a different problem? I ask as I don't have the known problem but I have noticed a slight bit of 'give' when open or closed. You can slide the slider back and forth ever so slightly. Not sure if it really is a problem or not.

My N95 was wobbly from day one, and got worse after about a month. I went to T-Mobile who said they *could* send it off for repair but they couldn't guarantee it'd get fixed as it wasn't a severe fault with the handset..

Luckily(?) a few weeks later my screen broke (lines all over it, the picutre would jump/distort/change colour) so I had to send it off for repair.

Whilst changing the screen they must have noticed the give on the slider and gave me a whole new case and screen - it's now perfect and feels more solid. I don't know if the 2 problems are connected. It might be worth sending back to get it fixed as it's a common fault.

Think the main problem people suffered was the clicking on the right bottom corner of phone. So when the phone was in the slid up position and you used any of the function keys it made an irratating tapping sound. Yours sounds fine, there is going to be a little give when the slider is closed so that it can move in the first place. If its quiet your fine if it sounds like a woodpecker when its open then you have clickyitis.

Hey guys , Just off the phone and o2 have told me to send the faulty handset back , by special delivery , and if they find the phone is faulty , they will send out a replacement.

Just hope like Halon said they dont send me one that is worse lol :icon14:

Anyways we shall see what arrives through the post in the next few days ....

fingers crossed !

This will be my fourth handset now !! ....and the slider is that loose it moves back and forward just when holding it in my hand 😮

thanks ..stu

Well guys, my replacement N95 came today, I dont think it is a new one ...maybe just a refurb....it had the earliest firmware installed on it, and had a bit of tell tale dust in the corners of the screen...i am just in the process of updating to firmware 11.

The slider feels a lot more stable which im pleased about has a tiny amount of play ...but im figuring that this may be normal...it certainly doesnt rattle around like my old one.

and sorry about the double post :icon14:

Edit !!!!!

Just seen lots of tiny scratches on the screen that mine didnt have when i sent it in......!!!!!!!!!! not happy back on phone again !!! 😡

I have finished on the phone now, they have said someone will call back in the next couple of days as soon as the replacement via courier on the doorstep has been authorised...sorry IF it gets authorised !.....IF !!!😡

The screen is in a shocking state now ive been looking at it at different angles and when I informed the guy at o2 of this he replied , thats because its not your original phone, I said ...damn right it isn't ..I looked after mine !! why couldn't you have just fixed the slider !! on an otherwise perfect phone.

Never mind though I will see what happens in the next couple of days...I am gradually becoming exasperated with all this ...and its only my love for this phone thats keeping me hanging in there ...like a girlfriend that we know is bad for us...we all been there guys lol :icon14:

cheers , Stu 😊

My first one from T-Mobile was a wobbly slider but everything else was perfect. No marks, no dead pixels, its never even crashed so far, never reset itself, its been perfect. Lot of people complained when they sent a handset back for 1 faulty slider they recieved another handset back with 2 or more additional problems along with the original problem.

If it is just the slider give the fix a go.

soz navs ...im in the camp that if i receive some goods off somebody that i purchase in good faith I want them to provide me with something that works perfectly without the need for any tampering with it from my part.

call me old fashioned...but i respect your view pal :icon14:

Damn right. If you buy a CD and it doesn't work, you wouldn't expect them to replace it with a second hand one from ebay with a few scratches over it that skips slightly at the end of track 11. If they send you a new phone and it doesn't work you expect a new one to replace it or at very least a phone that's in the exact condition as the one you returned but with the problem sorted. It's disgusting to even consider it should be put up with on a phone worth more than some brand new PC's.

I fixed my "wobbly" slider myself, took 15 mins, and i'm happy... 😊
Was pretty easy, for me at least, didnt break anything luckily...

I dont own it if i cant open it, is my moto 😊

build quality of the n95 leaves to be desired, i think...
When i removed the front cover (unrelated to slider fix) to have a look around I found some of the screws were not even tightened properly... poor poor poor...

What fix did you do?
And what screw's were loose?

Hi,

For the loose slider I used this guide:

http://www.simplysymbian.com/2007/05/02/how-to-repair-wobbly-slider-nokia-n95/

Couple of tips & findings,

- when u remove the back cover, remember to start from the side with the buttons, same for when u putting it back on.

- To remove the black metal slider "guides" you will need a Torx 5 screwdriver. I cant stress enough, good tools makes the job easier... so make sure u got a decent torx screwdriver, and careful not to "eat away" at the screw heads, if you find the screwdriver is slipping, get another one... Not worth messing up the screw heads.

- My phone actually was loose on both sides, but I found that for the left side, I only had to take it apart and re-seat, tighten it up to make it feel solid.

- For the right side, I used electrical tape (the black stuff) and applied it as shown in the url above, but had to apply 2 layers to make it thick enough.

Also as one makes the whole slider system "tighter" one thing which will happen is that once you applied this "fix" the phone does become a little harder to slide open. But this is prob as I was used to having it too loose. It did feel strange for a little while, but I got used to it, and prefer it being slightly harder to slide open.

I actually had to do the "sticky tape" procedure 2-3 times to get it just right, but this is easy enough, only 3 screws, so just be prepared for a little trial and error.

Also note that this whole procedure is completely reversible.

Now totally unrelated, when I first got my phone, I found that the 4 screws that were holding the front sliding bit, the ones behind the screen. You see 2 screws by sliding up, and 2 by sliding down. These were loose, and I had to tighten them.

thats about it,
If you need more info just let me know,

And to "Lynchy", I feel your pain! just don't give up! hopefully they will get you a new one. Just keep hassling them... There is a great forum contributor in the N80 forum called "Cash", who has good knowledge about the legal "threats" that we as users can use, if things get hairy, I hope he wont mind me saying this 😉 but you can always drop him a PM to see what he can suggest.

good luck!

Thanks pal.....o2 attempted to deliver another replacement yesterday for the phone they sent me with loads of little scratches on the screen, but low and behold ....it had the worst wobble of any phone i have had had yet.....they are coming again on Monday with another, just hope that might be the end of it. I asked o2 how these phones are passing some sort of quality control and they didn't have an answer for it, nor did they seem bothered to be honest.

I will just have to see what Monday brings now, I am not giving up till I get a good one :icon14:

Woohoo, i am another one of the thousands reporting N95's that are getting sent back.

I have just upgraded from my V3i to an N95 on T-Mobile (did this on thursday 19/07/2007) decided to go back to Nokia (my past experience of them has been spotless).

I got the phone the next day (20/07/2007).

Didn't really notice the wobble till sunday, so i phoned T-Mobile and they without putting up a fight, said they would send out a replacement.

That arrived today (24/07/2007). I was at work and so my dad accepted the phone. When i got home i went straight to the phone and opened the box. Behold another wobbly phone.

Got straight on the phone and they again said we will send you out another one and was told i will get it on the 26th. Said i needed ASAP as i am going abroad and am without a phone.

Lets hope No. 3 is better.

Im getting another "refurb" off o2 tomorrow....this is my 7th phone...and everyone has been of terrible build. im not stopping till I get a phone that does not have a problem with it 😉

UPDATE

Well after originally asking for my refurb to be delivered to my work address , it duly arrived at my home address...which I had to drive to the other end of town to receive, thus taking time off work.

The best bit is when the parceline driver unpacked the package......IT WAS A SODDING PRADA !!!......so I am no nearer getting a good n95 replacement for the dodgy one I have in my possession.

They are coming Friday with the correct package (hopefully).....Is this ever going to end !!! 😡

i dropped my n95 a few days back and now the left side has become a bit too tight...so much tat its scratching the * keys and if i dont do something about it its gonna scratch the whole paint off the key...and way to loosen the left rail?

By bending it? I tightened my slider by bending the rails a tiny bit, testing and bending some more. Finally the result was perfect. No doubt you can bend it back (flattening the L shape), but you could also bend your warranty by doing this...

Hey guys, just thought id let you know ....after my 8th refurb N95 that wasn't good enough, o2 decided to send me a brand new phone un boxed to see if that brought an end to the saga. I now am the proud owner of a solid... none wobbling.. none restarting... unscratched screen... n95

Thanks to all for the advice on this thread....just goes to show dont give up complaining till you get ur dodgy phone sorted if you have one.

Im gonna hang on to the old N95 till they ask for it back as they just sent me a jiffy bag with a free post thing on it to return it to them....they might forget you never know :icon14:

Nicely done. It took me 4 phones until I got one that was acceptable (I'm with Orange). First was clicky on the right corner, second was worse, third felt like it was almost falling apart, 4th one wasn't perfect but close enough (no clicky right corner!). Fair play to Orange, I had no problems getting replacements.:icon14:

My sis is on O2 and her's was perfect first time. Bear in mind we get a 2 year Nokia warranty with this phone, so it might be just as easy in future (as they're almost inevitably going to get more wobbly as they get older) to go to a Nokia service centre.

I think the N95 is great, but Nokia definitely need to kick someones ass in quality control!

I sent mine to Nokia Freepost directly and they repaired it within a week
its been more than a month and the phone slider is solid
I'd reckon everyone to send your phones back to nokia instead of sending it to your networks

hey guys forgot to say in this thread....after everything that went on with my replacement n95 i got a good one in the end...and guess what...they didnt ask for the previous one they sent back....so i have 2 now...lol.....give the other my missus...i said i bought it her !! :icon14:
