nokia n95 maps issues
The maps can be updated for voice guidance over GPRS.I dont understand what part of the maps program your having problems with. Please try to be more specific.
Start by going to the main menu - tools - settings - general - (scroll down) positioning. In 'positioning methods', decide which ones you want to use. In 'positioning server' you have to select the method by which the maps app 'phones home' to help it get a fix. I suspect you've got the access point set to a wlan rather than your gprs/3G access point. Set this and go back to the maps app and it may make more sense to you. The default access point is also set in 'settings' within the maps app, so make sure this isn't set to a wlan.
You get maps for free, which it will download on the fly, although it's better to install them to a memory card with the maps downloader. For voice guidance, in the maps app, go to 'extra services' then 'add navigation'. You have to pay for this service, which you can do with a credit card or (quite cleverly imo) by the handset sending premium rate sms messages to the provider. Once you've done this, you'll have turn-by-turn voice guidance.
IMO the maps app is far better than some people are making out, and compares favourably to TomTom running on my wife's E50.
see, when i go to select the positioning method, i check on integrated GPS and Network Based. can u explain more about how can i set my access point to 3G/GPRS instead of WLAN ? where can i download the maps app ? can u provide me the site please ?
here is what i dont understand:
why it always ask me to connect to devices through WLAN every time i click on "map" ?
why i can't set the position ?
can i still get the route somewhere when i am on the way or somewhere no WLAN connect ?
here is what i would like to know more about:
is the voice command related to route guide ? ( i don't need the voice guide,, i just want the route guide, like it knows my position wherever i am. )
so i hope these above are clear enough ....😊
thanks for the helps...
RE: "when i go to select the positioning method, i check on integrated GPS and Network Based. u explain more about how can i set my access point to 3G/GPRS instead of WLAN?":
There are two different places where this has to be set. One is for use by AGPS and one is for the Maps application. U can select the IAP for AGPS under 'positioning server' in Settings\General\Positioning. Select one of your IAP's which are not WLAN. To set the IAP to be used by N.Maps simply start N.Maps select Options\Settings\Network...
RE "where can i download the maps app": Do you mean the Maploader to be used to download maps to memory card using a PC? If so it's found here:
http://europe.nokia.com/A4353384
RE "why it always ask me to connect to devices through WLAN every time i click on "map"":
This is related to my first reply above. => Your N.Maps setting is set to use the network when needed (ie for download maps, poi's etc). U can disable it if you like but then of course you must at least have downloaded maps already using Maploader.
RE "why i can't set the position ?":
First time fix can take a while (everything from 1 min to 30...). Be sure to have the keypad open since the GPS is located in the bottom of phone. Take it outside and start N.Maps, sit down and wait. As said, may take a long time to get first fix. The "X" in lower right corner is replaced by "😉)" in the dish when fixed.
RE "can i still get the route somewhere when i am on the way or somewhere no WLAN connect":
I don't understand what you mean. You can of course get your position from the GPS wherever you are (as long as you're outside and get sat.fix). No need for either WLAN or Network coverage. Of course AGPS can only assist as long as there are network coverage since it uses it to send and receive data.
RE "is the voice command related to route guide ?":
Yes, voice command is used by route guidance to provide vocal guidance in addition to arrow directions. It's the route guidance that you have to pay for. Any voice command to be used with it can be downloaded using MapLoader for free but it's of no use if you don't have bought route guidance. You don't have to buy route guidance in order to view your position on the map wherever you are, this is what GPS does for you...
in Settings\General\Positioning, i see only "positioning method", there are three choices "bluetooth GPS, Integrated GPS, and Network based" i dont know which one to choose...
so in order to get the position where i am,, i have to sit outside and wait for awhile ? even though i see the "X" on the antena pic on the bottom right corner ?
it sounds like i have to buy the route guidance ? if so, may u tell me where can i get it ?
ohh, why does it ask me for the "last device used" when i open the map ?
my last request,, if u dont mind...
may u describe step by step on how to get the maps work ?
thanks alot...
1. Check "Integrated GPS".
2. The "X" on the antenna means that you do not have lock on any sattelites. The "X" will be replaced by some "😉)" when you do. You can see the status of satellites if selecting 'Settings\Satellite information' from N.Maps. Empty bars means receiving signal but no lock. Black bars means "lock on satellite". You'll need at least 3 black bars to get a position. (Note that GPS in general only works outside directly under sky, not inside buildings etc.)
3. To buy route guidance simply select (from within N.Maps) "Extra services" => "Route Navigation" => Follow instructions...
And finally; you should upgrade your phone firmware to 12.x. With 12.x you'll get "aGPS" which will improve sat lock time significantly (in my case from 5 minutes to <30 sec). aGPS will then become a fourth option for "positioning method" (should then have both "Internal..." and "aGPS" enabled).
.
thanks for everything.............
i have another question....
alright, this morning i sat outside of my house for 15m, i finally got the position, but when i went to my store at another city, i tried to get the position by click on the map, but it showed me the position at my house instead... so i wonder how to get new position? or i just have to sit and wait ? or s.th else...
It will always show "last known position" until it get a new lock. This means that you did not wait long enough to get a lock at your new location.
Beware of tall buildings nearby and be sure to have the keypad open and the phone in a 45 degree angle when using GPS.
And finally, as I said earlier you should upgrade firmware to 12.x since it has aGPS which locks on sat's a whole lot faster.
hey thanks a lot for everything.
so do i still need to download the "maploader" or "N.Map" ?
or i just need to upgrade to v12 ?
do u know where can i get cheaper V.12? cuz it seems alil expansive 3 years for 132$......😞
thanks

I don't know what you are talking about here but I'll try to answer anyway.. 😊
- MapLoader = PC program (free and downloadable from nokia.com) which allows you to download maps directly to phone (or phones memory card) instead of downloading it using GPRS/3G "when on the go" (which costs a lot of money if you don't have a flat rate deal)
- N.Map = Nokia Maps; Is the Map program already installed on your phone. Uses the internal GPS and the maps mentioned above.
- An upgrade to firmware 12.x will give you support for aGPS which will enhance GPS fix time significantly.
Re. "do u know where can i get cheaper V.12? cuz it seems alil expansive 3 years for 132$......😞":
Sounds like you're confusing phones firmware version with the cost to use voice/navigation guidance...?? With N95 (regardless of firmware version) maps are free to download, install and to use in conjunction with the GPS (e.g. positioning on map). But, route guidance (plan a route and have voice and/or directional guidance) is a payable service which you need a license code for in order to enable).
Upgrading firmware to 12.x will not give you free route guidance (although I believe you actually get some 3 days trial for free with 12.x), it will only give you support for aGPS.
alright... thanks for everything here.....😊 i kind of understand it now... but if u have anything to tell me more, i would like to know.... 😊

Moreover, I observed that many villages or streets with regional characters in their names can't be found by the application when they are tried to be searched this way.
