Dual Mode

If i switch my phone to GMS, does the internet just use normal GMS settings or does it auto switch to 3G/hsdpa mode to transfer the data ? Is the GMS setting just for calls ?

When on GSM, internet connections will only use GPRS (or EDGE if available in network) for data connections. It will not switch to either 3G or HSDPA.
GSM (2G) is a whole other network than 3G.

I'm 99% sure that turning off 3G means that both your calls and data will go over GSM network which means the best speed for the data will be EDGE. When you are connected you can see how fast in the top left corner.

Where i live my n95 struggles to get a 3G signal but i just use WIFI at home. In the city its covered in hotspots so i usually again use WIFI there. Its only ocassionally i use it commuting to work on the bus or train that i have to use 3G as the data carrier (again signal dependent) to browse the internet.

Just thought really as trying to squeeze more battery life out of the N95.

Well, I can top 'md27514', I'm 100% sure... 😊

And... having a week (or no) 3G signal when DualMode is enabled drains the batteri quite effectively so I would switch to "GSM only" if I where you.

sorry wrong thread! i wanted to ask why can't i call someone when in dual mode but can when in single mode? i can do this with my 6630 but not my n95

When set to Dual mode, the device uses either GSM, 3G or 3.5G network automatically, depending on the availability of the network from the service provider.
