Hi
Been lurking around the forum for a few days, but having just bought a 2nd hand N80 I thought I would register and ask some advice from the experts.
Ok here goes.
The N80 is on Orange PAYG and everytime I try to access a text message sent to me from the inbox the phone pops up with "General:System Error" and keeps beeping and flashing the warning at me.
I then have to remove the battery to reset the phone.
I thought about trying to update to a eneric firmware, but I cannot get NSS to see the phone, thus I cannot change its code to get generic Firmware onto it.
I also thought maybe it was the Sim card, but I tried this in another phone and it opens the text messages no problem.
As far as I can tell everything else on the phone works fine, and I am reluctant to send it back for a refund as it is in absolute mint condition, I would rather see if it was fixable.
If anybody can shed some light, I would certainly appreciate the help as I am at my wits end with it now.
Cheers:frown:
quick update:
Managed to get the firware updated to nokias latest generic one, but hasn't made one bit of difference.
I contacted the person I bought the phone from and they nformed me the phone was a replacement they got from orange 6 months ago as their original one broke.
My question now is would orange honour the warranty even though I am not the original purchaser of the phone.
Should I chance phoning them, explaining the problem and telling them it was a replacement 6 months ago that has went faulty again?
I know most folks are prob thinking send it back for a refund from the guy I bought from, but the phone is in such mint condition, I doubt I will get one as good for the money I paid for this one, hence if I could get it fixed I would.
cheers for any help😎
In settings menu, set network to GSM only and not dual mode.
also get orange to send you mms settings to phone.
The firmware update should have sorted out the problem....
thanks for the reply and help jet, but it never made any difference, there must be something wrong with the actual phone instead of just the software/firmware.
Looks like I may have to bite the bullet and get a refund on it.
thanks again😊
Where is your Inbox stored? On the memory card or in internal memory?
Check here: Messaging -> Options ->Settings -> Other -> Memory in use -> Phone memory
If it was set to memory card, then change the setting above and then remove the memory card. Reboot your phone (without memory card). Have someone send you a text message and see what happens. If this fixes the problem, then your memory card is corrupt possibly. To fix this (if it is the memory card), try formatting it as follows:
Menu -> Tools -> Memory ->Options -> Format mem. card
Hope this helps!
problem sorted.
Took the phone to Nokia service centre and they told me this is a common problem and sending it back to nokia would get it fixed, anyway, between sending it away and getting it back I done a bit more investigation and having spoken to Orange customer services for the 5th time I was told my sim card was not 3G compatible.
Sent me thru a new sim, all works a treat now, when I asked Nokia what needed fixed they could not tell me what had been done...................prob cause the more than likely done bugger all with it and just sent it back.
Anyway thanks for the help
