Magnets and the N95

6 replies · 2,097 views · Started 25 July 2007

I placed my N95 on top of a radio yesterday. I was most surprised when out of the corner of my eye I noticed the N95 had come out of standby and was playing a video.

Obviously there must be a reed switch in there that was operated by the magnetic field of the speaker in the radio.

Why does the N95 do this?

Almost all electronic devices are affected by close proximity to a magnetic field.
You are lucky the N95's memory was not corrupted as well, then you would have to format & re-install all your apps.
By the way, the N95 does not work very well if you put it in a pint glass and fill it with water.

Have some common sense, lad.

it seems N95 has magnetic sensors for slider. so phone thought you moved slider to
multimedia mode 😊

i got a leather cover which has magnet button to that holds it, when my camera button or gallary button touch it goes into landscape mode or unlocks the key pad

Yep, it'll do that. This phone has magnets and reed switches to detect the slide action. If a magnet comes into contact with the area of the switch, the phone thinks its been opened and will unlock. If it thinks it's been slid the other way (to show the media keys) it will switch to landscape.

you are best avoiding magnetic cases unless you want to place lots of pocket calls

Me too. It's rather silly, isn't it? 😊

What I did was to plug in the TV-connector so I could see what happened on the screen and then experimented until I found the right way to insert the N95 into the case. Fortunately there's a hole at the bottom of the case allowing room for the cable.

Opening the flap wide, turning the screen towards the belt buckle and keeping the N95 as far away from the flap while inserting does the trick for me.
