Phone Start-up Failed. Contact The Retailer !

Ok, today has not been a good day in my Nokia world.

I turned my N73 on at lunchtime and received the message "Phone Start-up Failed. Contact The Retailer" !!

So, I turned it off and tried again......same thing.

Tried again, and noticed that the headers for my two soft keys were showing so I quickly pressed one and the phone burst into life.

I then saw the Voicemail icon and got a warning saying I had a voicemail, which I did. I listened to it and deleted it and then disconnected. But the voicemail icon still showed !

So, I tried my voicemail again, ensured all messages were deleted and still it showed. Turned my phone off, and lo & behold, it threw up the same "Phone Start-up Failed. Contact The Retailer" message !

So, after buggering about, I decided to do a reset (*#7370*) which made no difference. So then, I did a firmware re-install. Nope, no difference there.

So I called up Orange. Apparantly they're had some "issues with Nokia handsets and voicemail" but she told me that my handset had been diagnosed as faulty, based on the message I kept getting on startup. She then proceeded to tell me that I was outside the Orange warranty and would need to pay 100 for a replacement handset or contact Nokia to get the handset fixed under their warranty. My handset was purchased new with my contract in November 2006.

About as much use as a chocolate teapot.

So, right now, I have managed to get my phone running, but will not turn it off. I will contact my nearest NSC on Monday but envisage being without my handset for some time.

It's wierd that all this happens after absolutely no problems before hand but that it coincides with this alleged issue that Orange are having with Nokia handsets and the voicemail function. I've tried swaping sim cards, but I get the same message 😞

Forgive me for thinking this all stinks a bit.

Anyone else had the same problem ?

that does suck man

at least the nokia service centre can help

bad service by orange if they admit theres been a fault and wont fix it

if youve got that in writting iam sure you have a case against them its in times like this iam glad i have insurance i ring up o2 say ive dropped my phone pay the 20 pound excess and they send me a phone out next day 😊 brilliant sevice and well worth the 7 pound a month 😊

anyways good luck with it mate all the best

by any chance do you have your memory card in when you start up the phone? i had this problem when i was on 4.06 when i updated to 4.07 it worked fine again
just take your memory card out when the phone starts up and itl work.
I also have the voicemail problem since my 6630 if i click listen there will be no voicemail i have used the same sim card since then but ive tried my phones my different cards and it wont show for them

Well, I popped the card out and fook me, it started up first time !

But I am on 4.0727.2.2.1 so according to your theory, I should be ok. :con?

Still, at least there's an easy way of bypassing the problem for now. Might just do a memory card reformat and see if that fixes it. Maybe something has gotten on the card and is fecking everything up for me.

Thanks again !! 😊 😃

Ok, here's a bizarre thing....

I backed up my SD card in preparation for me wiping it to see if it had any effect. I still had the voicemail icon showing, so before I tried anything else, I did the old "swap the sim into another phone, leave a message and delete then put back into original phone" trick, and fook me, it worked 😃

Not only that, but the phone now starts up first time, every time !! No more error messages !!

So, my assumption is that when a service provider has problems with sending the correct signal to deactivate the "voicemail waiting" icon, this causes some kind of lockup on startup.

I will of course monitor the situation, but I am currently back to normal and happy as a pig in you know what.

i had the same thing happened to my phone after i updated it to 4.0727.2.2.1 so i rebooted it and walla its working...then i restarted it and now its still works...i dont know what it is...

Right, scratch that.

Started up the phone this morning and got the same old error message...

"Phone Start-up Failed. Contact The Retailer" !!

AR5E !!!

Right, reformat the memory card is my next option.

Will keep you posted.

Have you had any issues since reformatting the card ?

:icon4: I have had almost identical problem after up FW of my N73ME to 4.xxx version. I have tried to change the MiniSD card >> faster one >>> slow one or format as Fat32 oppose to Fat16. Nothing work but take memory out start the phone and re-insert. So, I formatted memory card by phone itself then re-install all application that used to be on card. Then almost a week already everthing work fine till now. But beware, you will lose Sadoku and Air Album application, of course tried hard to get them all back on. If you have all your applications handy, I'd recommend you, first back up only contact and message to PC by PC Suite then format memcard, HR, restore contacts and messages then lastly, re-install all applications. Just like format PC with brand new Windows, through hell then finish it in heaven.
Hope this help and of course Good Luck :icon14: 😊

Ok, so I backed up the memory card and then reformatted it today and so far, everything is good. My only problem is the age old issue of whereabouts the N73 stores album art and ordering details because the moment I transferred back the SOUNDS folder, I lost all the re-ordering/renaming I had done along with all the album art I had put on.

Any ideas where this stuff is kept ?

Sorry about your album art. I already had gone through that issue before. Only way to do this is re-do it again. However, mine got only 8 albums, so not too bad to reorganize them. How many have you got?? :con?

Thank you, naughtydude. I already got my Sadogu and Air Album back already from the same source as your. Thank again. 😉
