Who here uses viewranger?

I have a few questions:

Can someone post picture of VR running on their phone, preferably with both, 50,000:1 and 25,000:1 aspects.

Whats the best features and which do you use most?

If you have the whole UK on your phone, how much space does it take?

Is it good?

I know I can download a trial, but its only valid for 16 days and I dont know when Id have a chance to use it, so dont want to 'waste' those 16 days yet. I also value what people think, rather than reading blurb on the makers own website.

Cheers in advance.

I do a lot of mountain biking and i have viewranger on my phone. It is truely brilliant. A garmin equivalent with the same features is about 250. I will get some shots posted for you.

Also worth mentioning that the guys who make it are very helpful and are very keen on getting feedback!!!

Yeah, I did email them with a question, and when i checked my email again I had a reply (within minutes).

Wasnt overly helpful tho. I asked them how much 25,000:1 scale mapping would be for all the UK (they only offer the 50,000 complete package) and the guy just said use the mapping software. When I did, it just said ask for a quote.

Still, thats a no go, because I figured the space used would be well over any memory card I could get.

As far as I can make out, the 50,000 maps for all the UK take almost a gig? Would like someone to confirm that if possible.

If you could post screenshots Id be very greatful.

i'd like to use it for mountain biking,
How the heck do you attach it to the bike though?

I havent managed to tackle that problem yet. I just keep it in my pocket and pull it out when I need it, it beeps when you have gone past a waypoint or if you have missed 1 etc.

By the way i find the most useful way to get info from the company is to add them on skype and they will normally answer your question instantly!!!

At 1:25k, the whole of the UK including islands amounts to 11502MB. At 1:50k, it rocks in at 2977MB.

Hope this helps

Damn. Thats a deffo 4 gig card purchase then. Obviously have to go for the 1:50k maps, theres no 12 gb micro SD card out yet!

Cheers for the info, looking forward to screenies if anyone gets round to doing them :icon14:

do you really need the whole of the UK though? Not sure what your proposed use is, but you could trim a lot of this down by only loading the bits you actually need at any point of time. Whilst you can buy the whole UK map, you don't need to load it all at once, only the areas you are going to be in.

BTW, I'll load a screenshot asap. Just a bit busy at the moment.

Probably not, but then Id like to be ready in case. Ive thought about it, but having everywhere in the Uk appeals to me, and its possible Id just nip off somewhere. However, I'll give it thought.

Is it easy to buy more of the map? I could just buy the local area, then buy more/the rest if I need to?

You don't have to load it all at once. The maps come on a dvd, for you to pick and choose as required.

Do you get the DVD even if you buy a map using the selection software? (For example, 6 gridsquares or whatever).

You can buy as little or as much as you like for a minimum of 20 - just watch you maximise the area you pick so you get the most possible for your money.

The best is to follow! If you're in a hurry to receive the map the guys at Viewranger can e-mail a link to their server and you can download direct. I purchased and downloaded a fair size of map in less than half an hour.

The software is superb too - its got me out of a few scrapes when the cloud came down in the Cairngorms and invaluable on the bike too. Highly recommended.

The more I hear about this the more Im impressed. I think I'll just bite the bullet and buy a few grids.

I havent actually heard a bad word about it yet, which is bloody rare, I can tell you.

Agree. I've been using this program for a while now, since it first became available on the N80 and love it. Their support is second to none. While initially testing it out, if I found a problem they'd send a new .sis file by return. Amazing. If only all companies were this good.

Ive just bought 20s worth (suprising what you can get for 20 areawise). I asked if I could have the maps downloaded and got a reply (within 5 mins) saying that they would stick them on a server and email me the links later this morning.

Cant say better than that really. Im really looking forward to trying this out.

And I have just recieved an email with the instructions and links to my maps.

Id like people to note, that they have had to put all these files up manually, as it was a personal map selection, usually its done by DVD on your computer.

Downloading now, and will be testing soon 😃

and a few more...

Let me know if theres any specifics. The best thing to do is have a play..I thinkg its the best 20 I've spent since having my phone!!

Thanks for the screen shots.

What was the scale in the map shot you put up, 1:25,000 or 1:50,000?

I fully agree, and heres a taster of just one of the many things you can do....(see attached)

Set it to record your route, and you can then upload the file to whatever, mainly google maps.

You get a lot of area for £20, and using the map software you can choose what you want. I myself chose a few around me, and the rest around my mums house, as she lives in the Brecon beacons. Its just very well made.

That looks like the 50,000 maps to me. Its got loads of cool stuff.

This app looks a bit like what I wish SportsTracker would be.
Sportstracker can save the route etc (as kml too) for google maps, but shame while using it on the phone that it draws a line on a black screen, i.e. no map support.
And going for bush walks here (Australia) it is a shame the Nokia and Route66 maps only shows roads and not bush walking tracks (and fire trails).
I was hoping something that supported digital topographical maps (do they exist?) would come along and it appears Viewranger is it!
Thanks for the tips about it, it looks a bit UK centric currently, hoping that someone can indicate support for other parts of the globe?

Well the whole strength of VR is the OS maps (Ordnance Survey), which is an organisation that maps the UK, for various purposes.

We have the advantage of them being very good and accurate, so for Australia to have something like viewranger you would also have to have an equivalent of OS here in the UK.

And then of course, a company to make use of it. Afraid to say that means its likely to stay UK only for the time being.

Here, if you want trivia: http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/

Was 1:50,000

It is good enough for most things but I might get some at 1:25,000 soon.

You can zoom in quite far, which isnt evident on the pictures Yade kindly posted.

Id post some, but....ahem...I dont know how to capture them from my 6110 navigator.

OK, here's a screenshot with it zoomed in a bit more.

I know I can download a trial, but its only valid for 16 days and I dont know when Id have a chance to use it, so dont want to 'waste' those 16 days yet. I also value what people think, rather than reading blurb on the makers own website.

Cheers in advance.
