Copilot

As most of you know from my previous posts, Im trialling copilot on my 6110 navigator.

Now so far, Im not impressed. Havent been driving with it yet, but Hit a few snags setting it up.

Basically, Ive copied the relevant parts to my memory card, and installed it. It took ages to install, but thats a once off I spose.

So, activation. No go there. Each time I tried, it just tried to connect to the net. It locked up the phone of sorts, and made it sluggish. Eventually I read the manual on how to do it manually via the website.

The menu system is bloody daft, but worst is the favourites. I cant add to favourites. WTF? Its put one in there automatically, when I planned a route, but I cant name it, so its just a postcode.

I know it sounds stupid, but Im sending it back if I cannot name favourites. I cant beleive thats not possible, so Im going to find an extended manual (Im assuming theres one on the DVDs). The small booklet one doesnt say anything about it.

But assuming you can, its a bloody funny way of doing it, as Ive been through many many options. I might even buy the navigon software, and see if thats any better.

Still, early days yet and the real test is in the routing and directions.

Lets face it....when it comes to satnav software....there's TomTom.......and then there is everbody else.

Accept no substitutes.
😊

Yes, well I WOULD use tomtom, but I *cant*. If you have been following the tomtom patch thread, you will know why.

I have also found the full manual. It appears you cannot name favourites. For this alone, I think I might have to return it, as I use postcode as my main means of entry, and Im supposed to choose from a big list of postcodes each time I want to go somewhere?

I have been following the tomtom patch thread and I'm eagerly awaiting the patch too.

However, instead of paying for copilot......if you really can't wait you could have bought tomtom AND an external bluetooth GPS. That works perfectly fine as I understand.

And an external GPS would coust you between £20-£30 on ebay.

What you mean is....you want tomtom on the integral gps on the handset.....I do too.

Patience is the keyword here.....it will come.
It has to.
The demand for it is enormous.

I could have, but I dont want to. As the patch is an unknown quantity I cant rely on that. And tomtom are saying nothing about if/when a version will be released.

Ive decided copilot is going back. the routing might be fine, but Im afraid the menus are plain awful, and each trip would take me a few minutes in the car to setup. Small stuff you might think, but usability is very important to me.

I fully agree with you.....if its a pain to use....I wont use it.

The patch is an unknown quantity.....but I want to see how that works BEFORE being forced to buy an external GPS.
I have decided already that I will end up having tomtom as it's what I'm used to.

Have you tried Route66 ?
That does let you save and name favourites......and is OK as far as satnav goes.....I'm using that at the moment.

It does seem to take a LONG time to get an initial lock though.....and I cant believe all of that is down to the internal GPS ?
Yet another reason for me wanting to try the patch.......I'm holding out a hope (vain hope maybe) that the patch will get and use a sat lock faster ?

But I also like being able to change voices (hers on Route 66 is annoyingly bossy sounding) and I would like to be able to add speed cameras.....which......unless someone tells me otherwise is not possible on Route 66 ?

I would also like to hear if anybody has tried the Navigon software ?

Err, yes, just a bit. Route66 is bundled with my phone, specifically for it actually. Im not going to repeat all the problems here, but its awful, and nowhere near good enough (wrong direction on the motorway for one).

Ive just discovered I cannot get a refund for my copy of copilot, as its 'opened'.

So I suppose I have to sell it on ebay, unless the place I got it from accept it (hoho, as if).

I might buy navigon now, see how that turns out. Im thinking the menu system cant be as retarded as copilots.

Im sorry for the people wanting to know about copilot. If I cant return it, and it goes on ebay I will at least have some time to do some travelling reviews.

Ok, Ive decided to give details of copilot, perhaps its just a personal thing.

It will not be indepth, I shall only be putting things I think useful (or not).

There is no main menu as such. The nearest thing is 'settings', which brings up options such as

POI alerts - you can select which from a menu, the inbuilt ones, or custom ones. Unfortunatly, you cannot select more than one at once. So you cant be warned of petrol stations and speed cams for example, its one or the other. You do have the option of how far they are reported, and if to report them on route, or if they are near route.

You get the usual settings, what the distance is in, map rotation etc.

Also there is congestion zone warning, however I have no idea how up to date that is.

Now, heres the gritty bit - how to do plan a simple route. You get out of the menu, and the option to 'Add a stop' is there. Choosing that, you get the options of a favourite, a contact in your phone book (which didnt work dispite trying 5 correctly addressed people in mine), address (can be a combination of various things, house no, street, or simply postcode), and landmark, which I admit I havent figured out yet.

When you have selected one, it adds it to the stop list. You can carry on adding as many as you like. Its worth noting, everything you add in your stop list, gets added to favourites automatically. Now this is my main gripe.

You cannot add to favourites any other way. You cannot edit anything in favourites, and you cannot stop anything added to the stop list going into favourites.

Once favourites has 50 destinations in, its starts deleting the oldest. While you can delete things in favourites, you had best hope you know what the detail is related to. As I use postcodes in all of my navigation, and often just postcodes, I usually wouldnt have a clue what to delete.

I cannot comment on routing, although it seemed ok from the short trip from work to home.

One more annoyance. When giving instructions, theres a pause inbetween.

The first part - example 'In x meters' comes, then theres a half second or more pause - 'turn right'.

Sounds silly, but it started to annoy me.

Signal was fine, lock on seemed quick enough (without AGPS I will add).

I hope this is useful to someone, if anyone has any questions, I'll try to answer them.

IMPO this is not up to scratch for proper satnav for your phone.

Sad, but true. I think I've tried every single phone GPS software out there and TomTom continues to stomp them all.
