The 2007 Smartphone Standard

Never mind disappointing hardware, in Smartphones Show 40 (MP4 here, YouTube here, RSS) I present my definition of what I want a 2007 smartphone to be. Can any current devices, running any OS platform, match up? (clue: the Nokia N95 gets closer than most) Also, for heavyweight fans, there's a hands-on review of the Windows Mobile Toshiba WVGA screened G900...

Read on in the full article.

The G900 looks a little disappointing.

I think it is because it is in effect Toshiba having it's first dip in this area after some time. Perhaps the next version will include the better camera, GPS and more polished software. Great potential. But looks like it's still going to be E90 for me. Only other one you might want to look at Steve is the Kaiser. That would have been a real contender for me if it had VGA.

EDIT: You sure about the Opera Browser not utiliszing high res Steve. I use it on my MDA Pro (640 x 480) and the high res really does make a huge difference. Though the physical screen is much bigger.

"Ah, if only I could find a man to love me the way Steve Litchfield loves his phones...."

That's a bit racy isn't it, Steve?

On my old Ericsson R800 World or some thing ... i used to be able to set calling cards and dialing rules for almost every number! I donot see the feature in any of the current S60 smart phones ... now a days. I understand that you have an internet call option but it is not always the cheapest esp places like India & Aus (mobiles)... (8c vs 14-20c!). Do you know of any way i can set calling cards and dialing rules?

Heck, you can't even set custom ringtones on the iPhone.

Do you ever get the feeling the phone world is slowly going backwards in many ways? 😊

I suppose there's pressure to remove complex features to make the phone easier to use, but a better alternative would be to keep the features but hidden behind a more easier to use interface. Power users would know how to access the advanced mode, whereas normal users would stick to what they're familiar with.

My observation is that yes it is critical to run 3rd party applications but the disparity between the WM5/6 and Palm OS and Symbian (S60 & UIQ3) is still vast. The Palm OS applications, in general, seem very well designed and we need these developers to port their applications to Symbian. A platform is no good without creative s/w developers.
