The Nokia E90 at the Edinbugh Fringe - Web in its element

More from Ewan Spence in his continuing real world E90 test at the Edinburgh Fringe. A big part of chasing round after acts is being fully Web-connected and PDF-compatible and in this regard the Nokia E90 excels, with the huge RAM and screen making Web/PDF work a relative doddle.

"(a small caf in a language school hosting a monologue from Adolf Hitler in the hour before he dies)"

That sentence couldn't be more arts-festival-ish if it tried! 😊

Just out of interest, is there free wi-fi in the Pleasance Couryard and the Underbelly again this year? While I have yet to leap from my 9500 to a shiny new e90, it'd still be nice to get some free net goodness next week at the Fringe...

I have a sheet/doc/pdf on my E90... and I want it to be placed on the root desk screen. How do I do it? C'mon - how do you put a shortcut on the E90 desk?

Dan Din: you get Tracker and use that as your homescreen and put shortcuts out the wazoo on that....that's how.

Thanks for that. So it seems, without third party apps, you cannot do it! No short cuts on the E90! Crazy!

It's better than it used to be: the older versions of S60 didn't even support user-created sub-folders!

I agree that they should let people put shortcuts to any object anywhere in the UI, it's very strange that you have to hunt documents down.

Third-party apps, like Tracker, for the E90 are not that expensive given that the E90 can cost USD1000! The productivity benefits of Tracker, Aquacalendar and Papyrus (for example) are very high on the very flexible E90 platform. ...its those positive comments and attitude again....

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see why document shortcuts should clutter up the desktop/standby screen. With a serious device like the E90 you're going to have dozens of documents, all neatly sorted into sub folders in the file system, perhaps grouped by subject. It makes more sense to use File manager as a 'document desktop', launching documents from the appropriate folder.

Steve

I think that's personal preference Steve. I for one agree with you but I know lots of people who leave documents on their computer desktop for quick access. Those people will prefer to be able to leave links on the desktop.

That said I think Nokia is right to not implement that feature. A little more "Apple"-ness and control of placement of the icons, rather the current model specific mess, in order to create a consistent user experience cannot be a bad thing.
