N95, T-Mobile UK and Skype

I'm interested in getting a N95 on T-mobile on my return to england, Their web-n-walk package seems to be a very good idea however on the 'plus' and 'standard' plans it states that you cannot use VOIP software such as skype.
My question is this,
can they actually tell? If I was to use a third party program such as Fring which I have heard so much about (does this work over wifi as well if a signal is present?) are t-mobile able to tell what I am using my bandwidth for?
Anyone using an N95 on a web-and-walk tarriff and using Skype with success or am I going to have to buy the Max plan to use skype?

Yes. If they choose to look, but they use the simpler approach of port blocking. I couldn't get my IM, FTP or VOIP working until I upgraded. Then once I'd gone for the right package, all my programs worked.

@Kyuro

I use Fring but only use it over WiFi, but you can always try and see what T-Mobile say as usually they will warn you before taking any action is my understanding.

That's my point. I didn't even need to wait for a warning from them. The programs wouldn't work (well, the programs worked but I was unable to get any data to or from them). Once I "upgraded", they mysteriously started to work properly. So by simple power of deduction, T-Mobile are able to monitor/control data access by these sorts of programs.

Out of interest, how were you planning on using Skype anyway? I was under the impression there wasn't a Skype client for Symbian.

Do a google for Fring....I have it on my phone......its an interface for a lot of things.....including Skype.....and it works a treat !!

Use Truphone - great on 3G.
But TBPH, it's not a serious option unless you move only inside 3G zones - which for any network is not a serious option.
Otherwise, there's a lot of fannying about.
I tried it for a while - but found it easier just to use GSM at 4p/min (I'm on the UKP 50/month plan) than fart around with VOIP at 1.2p/min.
Sure it's a saving, but at what cost ?

last time i tried fring worked fine over t-mobile gprs / 3g. they probably don't like it but hey - tough titty 😊

hmm well it's not a major thing for me, it's a definite advantage, i would just get the phone on 3 but they charge a fortune for the handset on a 35 tariff compared to t-mobile but what can you do...

Interesting to note that Skype has been tits-up all day today (16 August 2007). People are coming out of the woodwork and saying they've been predicting this for a long time. I don't know how true that is but I'm glad I went for a SIP-based service.
