Have an N80- getting an N95.
If I use Content Copier on PC Suite, can I simply upload that backup file into the new N95?
What other backup methods would you recommend to be on the safe side (contacts and calendar are most important to me). Any way to just copy these onto a file on my PC?
Regards
Backing up N80 to use on new N95
When you use the nokia backup function, I think you can choose where to put it. So you could save it to a location, and back it up onto various formats (hard disk, memory key, etc etc).
When you 'restore' to the N95, it should just put on what it can, contacts, calender etc and settings too. If it messes up, it doesnt matter too much as you have the original file backed up somewhere.
You can use the Transfer application on N95 to pass all things inside N80 to N95. The same application exist on N80.

If you restore an N80 'Backup' on a different model (or even to a newer FW of the same model) you can cause serious reliability problems.
It is safe to use Transfer, Content Copier and PC Suite Synchronisation only.
Do NOT restore a Nokia backup file from one model to another model.
My bad, I thought it was ok as I have done it many times before between models, the latest being my 6233 to 6110 navigator.

It might not cause problems on the other hand plenty of other users on AAS have said it did.
Anyhow, there's several reliable ways to move music/images/vids/contacts/etc. safely, without using a Nokia Backup file.
Apps are best re-installed from the origional SIS or JAR files.

I agree completely.
I restored settings on an N80 from one firmware to a newer one and the thing then wouldn't pick up text messages at any other time than power on. Full reset cured, restoring settings broke again.
Use PC sync regularly, then you always have a back up if you lose your phone, or if your PC hard disk goes.
Won't have both the N80 and the N95 together so won't be able to use 'transfer' program on the phone.
Anyone able to leave step-by-step instructions as to how to do it on the PC?
I went through this same thing when I went from N80i to N95.
SInce I use a Macbook Pro, I just did one last BT sync on the N80 and then made a list of all the software I had installed on it. Used a freeware program from Nokia to export all my SMS messages.
Then I sync'd the N95 with the Macbook Pro for flawless contacts/calendar migration, copied the data on the 2GB mini-SD from the N80 to the new 4GB micro-SD card.
Inserted micro-SD card into the N95 and uninstalled any app that didn't automagically reinstall itself. Went through the list and reinstalled those via BT OBEX Push file transfer.
Overall I'd say it took about 30 minutes to migrate over completely that way.
Nokia's PC applications suck but their Mac OS X app is actually quite decent. Go figure.
When I first switched on the n95 it asked me if I wanted to import data from another phone. On with the bluetooth on the n80 and the n95 grabbed everything I wanted, job done.

And then there's that one...but mine never asked me that.
