Strange Characters On N95 -??

6 replies · 2,112 views · Started 17 August 2007

I'm getting strange characters displayed on my N95 screen saver and Calculator.
For instance, instead of the time displayed I'm currently showing '*)2-/' (real local time is 9:57pm) on the screensaver.

Also the Calculator function is unusable, as pressing 1 shows as '😉', 2 shows as '*', 3 shows as '+' etc. etc.

Anyone know what's causing this?

I did change the product code from O2 UK code to a 'Euro 1' one and update to Firmware 12. Could this have caused it? Anybody else had this problem?

Makes it ruddy impossible to tell the time from the screensaver :frown:

Yeah I tried that. I'm using Blue Dots theme, but I still get the problem even if I use any of the Nokia default themes or any other theme.

I notice on the clock on the homescreen, that the character at the 3 o-clock position is also displaying symbols instead of a number (Date/hour?).

I've installed the 3rd Party Calcium calculator, and thankfully that works fine, so I'm not without a usable calc. Also Dialing numbers display perfectly.

I've done 'battery-out' resets etc, but all to no avail. Strange problem this.

Either it's a faulty handset in some way, or there's some setting I've changed that has caused this display fault.

Good point!

Erm, how do I check/change those settings please?

Update: Just found Phone and Writing language set to English. Unless there's some phone code settings I can access to change some more fundamental settings?

I don't know if it's related, but any web page I access on the N95 displays all the text in some Gothic font, not a normal one like Ariel or Times New Roman. Very annoying and I don't know how to change this either!

Fixed it!

Turns out some app I loaded had put some strange fonts in the Mem Card \Resource\Fonts folder.

I used the instructions here...

darlamack.blogs.com/darlamack/2007/05/changing_fonts_.html

and changed all the fonts to Arial (renamed to S60 3rd Edition naming conventions), rebooted, and everything's back to normal.

Happy days 😊
