Hello there,
I'm thinking about getting an E61 with a Web'n'Walk T-Mobile (UK) plan, but was hoping to take advantage of others experience before I part with my money 😊
1) How reliable is its SyncML software? I use Memotoo.com and Scheduleworld.com, so if anyone has any experience of using this phone with those servers (especially on T-Mobile) I'd be grateful to hear.
(I'm currently trying to Sync my SE K700i on Vodafone with these two sites and it is as if Voda has started blocking them which I'm not happy about).
2) Getting an E61 is partly to replace my PDA, for which once use is as a universal remote control (Novii Remote on Palm). Does anyone know if there's a IR control application for the E61 (even though the IR port is on the bottom!).
If there's any other problems or "unintended features" of the E61 that I should know about, I'd be glad to hear too.
I saw Steve Litchfield's E61i review; was good to see it be recommended over the iPhone, although T-Mobile aren't offering the E61i yet 😞
Thanks for reading.
1) I have E61i. It supports SyncML protcol, and according to www.memotoo.com it's listed with supported devices along with E61. Check http://www.memotoo.com/index.php?rub=infoSyncML.
2) You can only enable the IR beam, but no control app. But there are 3rd party apps for such, even if I don' t know a sepcific one.
For me, I prefer S60 phones over UIQ ones. UIQ is more advanced, but S60 phones are more practical. E61(i) is a good replacement to UIQ PDAs. It's flixible to be used one-handed and two-handed. It has strong email clients and a great Web browser. Wide variety of applications for the most spread platform. Even E61i has limited free RAM at boot (22 MB), I never face RAM problems especially when browsing the Web (in good system conditions). Its full QWERTY keyboard is nice and easy to use. After one day, you will be familliar with it. It's good in most smartphone usage, and makes messaging, chatting, and editing documents very easy as a computer. I think that it's more practical than SE keyboards and on-screen keyboards. Also its battery one of its strong points. But it miss good multimedia. Limited 2 mp camers with poor focus and bad digital zoom. But it's good to capture your moments. Standard multimedia apps and Gallery.
I think that it worth to wait for E61i, it has good enhancements, advanced business features with great phone appearance. Also the 2 mp camera.
Good luck.
Hi there,
Thanks for the reply. :top:
With the SyncML point. I've seen the page you're referring to, I think it's the Funambol page which Memotoo links to. I have seen that, although I was taking a sceptical eye to it 😉
Infra-red; I was assuming it would be a 3rd party solution, its just that I haven't found one yet. So if anyone else reading this knows of a 3rd party universal remote control application for S60/E61, I'd be glad to know about it too.
(Yeah I know, I'm lazy, but I've always wanted a mobile phone that'll do my spreadsheets and control the TV at the same time :laugh😊
Nice to hear about the battery life, I didn't know it was particularly good.
As for E61 vs E61i. The camera was a worry to me. Although with my current (non-smart) phone, I haven't actually used the camera for ages, so I began to wonder if I could live without a camera in my phone. (Instead use a full size camera, but replace the SD card with a Mini-SD in an adapter, then I can still get photos onto the phone if I need to).
Just a case of how long it'll be until T-Mobile offer the 61i and I doubt they'll tell me. Although £9.99 for an E61 is very tempting 😊
I have a question! I am considering the E61 and I would just like to check that using Wi-Fi is actually free?
I wouldn't put it past the networks to add charges somehow!
Also, it will work with the orange livebox, right?
Thanks!
I did not have the chance to try WiFi, but it is not related to network charges. If WiFi access in your region is free, so no charge. I'm not in the UK ot Europe, if the Orange Livebox is network-dependent, it may be inaccessible using WiFi. Some network operators open their mobile portals only through their nerworks, and that is the case in my country. It's even closed using DSL connection.
Well since I posted my questions T-Mobile appear to have stopped offering it. I'll keep an eye on them in case they replace it with the E61i, but otherwise I'm stuck now.
In the meantime, my current provider, Vodafone, are offering the E70 to new customers, so if it's also an upgrade option for existing customers too, I might go for that.
Don't suppose there's a 3rd party universal remote control application for that is there? 😊
If a keyboard smartphone is important for you, wait for E61(i). It has better keyboard (more practical use), display (larger 2.8" that the 2.1" of E70), and battery life. E70's display has higher resolution than E61(i), but smaller size as I mentioned. This results in verty small fonts. If you saw N80, it has the same resolution and display size as E70. E61(i)'s display is large and always in landscape mode which is optmal for messaging, typing, web browsing. E61i also has Quickoffice on ROM with editing capabilties, which is missed in E70.
I'm sorry for the remore control application, I did not try to use it before.
I have just spoken with a 3 representative using the livechat function on their website, and to my horror they have DISABLED the wifi feature on the handset!
The chat:
[Luke] Is it completely free to view internet pages using the WiFi functionality on the Nokia E61?
[Rahul] hi Luke
[Luke] hi
[Rahul] i am sorry but the Wifi feature is disabled on that handset
[Rahul] we don't support Wifi
[Rahul] would you be ordering a deal today? if yes then i can let you know about today's promotions....
[Luke] not if it doesn't have the WiFi... can I ask why you do not support it?
[Luke] surely the Wifi is nothing to do with the network itself?
[Rahul] well the Wifi feature is disabled on the handset
[Luke] but why is that?
[Rahul] because we offer a different deal and offer for internet usage on the handset
[Luke] ok
[Luke] thanks

You seriously can't edit office files on the E70?
Can I purchase an upgrade so that I can edit files?

The OP is mistaken, the office suite that comes with the E70
does allow full editing.
