Web Viewer vs Browser

Hi, I would like to ask you, which is better-Web Viewer( JAva) or Browser( C++). I intend to buy one of them but which?!
10x!
Miro

I use WebViewer since many month, and it's run well except with GPRS,
but 2 days ago arrive the new Doris Browser and it is VERY VERY BETTER than WebViewer (sorry Reqwireless...).

I vote 100% for Doris Browser (and work well with GPRS).

Good question, they both have their own plus points.

Doris Browser allows you to browse full screen, and supports SSL. It's about 173K in size, although it compresses (with SpaceDoubler) to 79K. It also seems to use a direct connection to the internet.

Webviewer doesnt support SSL, and you can't switch it to full screen mode, although you can view .pdf and .doc documents. It takes up around 50K on the phone. It always goes through a proxy server at requireless, so you dont have a direct connection to websites.

If you're using GPRS to surf, you might be better off using Webviewer, because requireles's proxy server scales the images on webpages down, so instead of downloading a HUGE image, and you being charged a huge amount, you get an image that fits the size of the screen, and is smaller to download.

If you intend to use a browser through your bluetooth connection, neither of them are fantastic, with webviewer each time you click a link you have to choose your dummy gprs access point, and then it will go and retrieve the page. If you use Doris, you have to select the dummy access point several times per page, which is mighty annoying. If anyone from AnyGraaf happens to be reading this, could you add another selection to your access point list, "none", so that Doris doesn't try to establish an access point, but rather uses the socket connection that is already provided by bluetooth or IrDA and mRouter.

Hope this helps

Andy

"It always goes through a proxy server at requireless"

That why WebViewer never work with my GPRS (Orange in France), like other software (YFTP, PhotoExpress). All this software use a proxy server.

and only Doris Browser work well my GPRS in France because it is a direct connection to internet.

are you agree with that Ephebe ???

Could be ceb, I'm no GPRS expert. Here in the UK GPRS charges are obscene. Its about time we were given a flat fee for reasonable usage, instead of being charged by the byte. Until that happens, I'm going to be without GPRS.

I've not used yftp or photoexpress, so can't comment on whether they have to use a proxy server or not. It is possible that your operator blocks the ports that they try to use. I thought that webviewer used port 80 to connect to Reqwireless' proxy server, so I'm not sure why that should cause you problems.

Certainly Doris is an excellent piece of software. If they can add a "none" access point i'll buy it straight away.

Cheers

Andy

Ill vote for Doris too. The main advantages for me are that because it doesnt go through a proxy if you visit a site that checks what contry your coming from you dont end up at the Canadian version like you do with WebBrowser. I also find scrolling through long pages quicker with Doris due to it jumping half page at a time instead of link by link.

If you move the joystick left and right, instead of up and down in webviewer, it jumps a whole page at a time.

Thanks for that bit of info, I didnt use web viewer all that much but when I did I never came across the full page scroll. Ill be sticking with Doris for now but will remember that should I switch back at a later date.
Cheers

10x for your reply guys. Do you know when Doris will be available for purchase?! As I know for now it is only in Finland.
BR, Miro

Get it from softwaremarket:
http://www.softwaremarket.nokia.com/
section 7650, personal productivity

with Doris browser you don't have an "goto" or URL like webViewer has...
with doris browser you have to bookmark it first before you can goto that website

But isnt GPRS free at the moment? Since MMS is free, and MMS has to be sent via GPRS?

It better be, or Im probably gonna get hit with a hefty bill soon :?

I don't know how it is in your country, but here in Czech Republic you are using different access points for connecting to wap, mms and Internet. So you can have one APN free (MMS) and for connecting to other APNs you must pay. E.g. here is paying for GPRS wap approximatelly 10 times higher like paying for GPRS Internet.

Better start saving for the tephelome bill then 😃
Dont think its free, even if MMS is.

I'm on Orange, in the UK....

MMS APN is... Orangemms free at the moment woohoooo!
WAP APN is... Orangewap wap access pack costs 4 / 10MB(reasonable usage), not bad.
Inet APN is... Orangeinterner costs range from....

$4/month for 0.5MB, then anything over that is charged at 8/MB
to
528.75/month for 500MB, then anything over that is charged at 1.18/MB

I hope your not on Orange, up there in Royston Vasey.

Eek! Im on O2, and Im connecting through a standard WAP GRPS access point.

Better see if Webviewer will connecxt through my MMS access point then :?
