e61 not liking irc

OK, so I got me a shiny new e61 yesterday and immediately set about proving the guy at the three store wrong (he claimed the wlan on the e61 couldn't be used for web access, only for file transfers). So I immediately used the wlan to download putty and connect to my uni servers via putty. All well and good.

Then I used wlan to download mirggi (0.4.8). I put in my usual server and channel data, it said connecting to server, sat about for ages and then timed out. I tried other servers, same thing. I tried individual servers instead of central servers and even tried raw IP addresses, still no good. I tried an older version (0.4.6) and much the same happened. So I tried jmirc, wireless irc and Virca, all are giving me something along the lines of SymbianOS error =-33 : GeneralOperationtime-out.

So I tried them on the work wlan and much the same happened. So i tried using the usb cable and IP passthrough, still no good. I even tried a software update from nokia, but they said I had all the newest software.

So, anybody got any ideas as to what might be up, because people keep telling me that it works fine on their e61 and that doesn't make me feel any better. I'd consider calling three but I did that three days ago to ask if they allowed irc traffic over their 3g network and they didn't have enough support tiers to find somebody who even knew what irc was.

So yeah, somebody please save me from the indignity of keeping a computer on with an ssh connection open. I can't live without my irc on the go now that I have a phone that should be able to do it (really I just want to irc from the toilet)

Also, hi, I'm new here.:ciao: :wavey:

clearly your curiosities have been piqued, so i shall continue the tale.

I decided to try something more basic. As we all know, you can connect to an irc daemon via telnet and even attempt conversation, though it's complex as you like. So, having tried it on windows telnet and knowing it worked I tried to get putty to connect to my standard irc server via port 6667. It was having none of it. I put this down to sshing instead of telnetting. So I install mocha telnet and, having tested to make sure it works on my uni servers, I tried using that. It also did not want to connect.

So I have come to the conclusion that, for whatever reason, my phone is blocking port 6667, which seems odd to me. So anybody know how I might stop it doing that or be able to point out the flaw in my logic?

not to keep replying instead of editing, but these are further developments.

I've now managed an ssl connection on 6697 and a standard irc connection on 7777. I'm going to say that standard irc ports are blocked somehow, which'll annoy the jillickers out of me

edit: 6668 also works fine. Apparently somebody's done a useless job of preventing me from ircing, but there are still plenty of things that need 6667, so if anybody has some ideas, feel free to share them

Hi,

You mention that putty works find for you over WLAN, so I'm not sure why your IRC client wouldn't work. I gather you also have no trouble with the web browser using the same WLAN connection?

On a whim, I just went and installed mirggi, and logged into #mobitopia without any trouble. I'm using my home wifi.

Are you positive that your router is allowing the traffic through in both directions? Are you able to use IRC from a computer on the same wifi? What kind of WLAN connection are you using?

The router definitely allows IRC through in both directions since I regularly use it from computers on that router. It's a belkin wireless G router/adsl modem, though, as I say, I've also tried it using an IP passthrough on the data cable and it still wouldn't.

I haven't tried using the 3G or GPRS because my contract doesn't cover data usage until the 28th and I fear surcharges.

as read by a computer on the same wlan

Hmmm. I missed the bit about the cable that you tried.

You might want to reset (as in, reformat) your phone. That way you know you have a clean, factory-state device. Then install only mirrg and see if it works.

Is your phone carrier-branded? Mine is not. You mentioned that other people told you irc works on their e61's.... do you know if they had branded phones? Perhaps there is a carrier customization blocking your irc port.

it's definitely at least slightly customised, dunno how a format would affect it, or how to go about it

I look at the settings for my home WLAN connection, including advanced options, and I don't see anything special that would affect any ports. I can't help but wonder if it's an operator setting that's affecting you.

You can do a format, aka hard reset, by typing the reset code from standby: *#7370#. The phone will prompt you for the lock code, which is 12345 by default.

You can search the forum for more info on this. Basically it restores your phone to its original, out-of-box state. However, you will lose everything that you've saved to the built-in memory -- contacts, calendars, settings, apps, etc. (The miniSD memory card will not be affected.) So if you go this route, either have your personal data backed up, or be prepared to give it up. 😊

For a phone backup, either sync to your computer (PS Suite/Win or iSync/Mac), or for some info (like contacts) you can use Tools->Memory->Back Up to Memory Card on the e61.

If there is an oddball setting that you or someone else manually entered into the e61, the hard reset will eliminate it by restoring your phone to all of its defaults. You will also be able to rule out the possibility that another installed app is interfering with your connectivity, since they'll all be gone.

If your phone is "fixed" by your operator to disallow use of port 6667, it's likely built into the system, and the reformat will not help. In that case, I would suggest debranding your phone. It's not difficult; I did this myself when I first got my phone, because I got a 3-branded model from Hong Kong. I found instructions to do this online, and didn't have any trouble. But it does require a Windows machine to run the software.

To sum up: first try a hard reset, and if that doesn't work, consider debranding your phone. And back up any data before you do anything!

i'm thinking the full format will be the way to go, though I'd like to find somebody else on three uk and see if they have the same issue, because if not I'd be considering getting on three's case about it and just getting a working phone.

That said, from what you've said it looks like three have a global policy of crippling their phones, though I'd say blocking the Port from the phone itself is just bad manners.

i'll have a poke around and see if I can find anything helpful, otherwise I'll be looking for how to reset the phone (makes me glad I held back on adding my contacts, though I have to wonder why my phone can't read the contacts on my usim anyway).

Thanks for all the help, looks like I've got an action packed bank holiday ahead of me.
