Hi,
Got a N80ie firmware v5. I have just started using it and noticed the following bug (nokia tech support say its a not supported feature).
All phone numbers are programmed into the address book as "+" "international access code" "area code" "number" - the "+" being the crucial element here. This ensures that when roaming abroad the local GSM carrier will substitute the "+" with the relevant local international access code. So your number will work no matter where in the world you place the call. GSM feature from the start.
Now here is the bug. US operators tend to strip the "+" from US mobile numbers sending text messages through their SMS gateways. Hence the SMS will arrive showing as "1" "area code" "number" missing the "+" .
It appears that the N80 is too stupid to do what both my ancient Motorola U6, Samsung D900 and any phone I ever remember owning were able to do. Connect this number without the "+" to the matching address book entry and show the name stored in the address book instead of the sender's number. So I know I got a message from say Jack instead of 18881234567 when Jacks contact is held in the address book as +18881234567 and the carrier delivered it showing as 18881234567.
Nokia suggested to strip the "+" from all my phone numbers - sadly I do travel and thus would not be able to place calls correctly when roaming. Also since I receive international texts which get delivered with the correct notations including the + before the international access code I suspect the phone will probably again fail to match them leaving me guessing which international friend just texted me. Either solution is unsatisfactory and since every other manufacturer seems to be able to deal with this problem frankly it seems a bit of a joke.
So is this a S60 specific "feature" or is this a Nokia specific blunder (which tech support cliams) or a N80 specific bug? Is there any way to fix this? The answer to this question I guess somewhat determines my level of avoidance of Nokia in the future both as corporate and personal user. Have they totally lost the plot??
Thanks for anyones' thoughts.
Ralf
