Im more than willing to do a video with navigon, but have no idea how to do it.

Some kind of digicam with video capabilities? Don't worry too much about the quality, as long as the framerate is ok. It has always been a problem for Navigon so a video would need to show how this performs irl...

Lol, dont have anything like that. The only recording thing I have is the phone, and theres obvious issues with trying to record with that!

Oh, I already foresee a brilliant design of mirrors hanging from all kind of weird angles inside your car. It is beautiful! 😊

Good round up bartmanekul 😊

Only just to add i am very surprised by your results. I would have put Co-Pilot top myself. The menus are not that bad and they all have their faults. Copilot has the best routing algorithms and navigational UI and graphics IMO. Also, being able to add POI's is a must for me, especially for speed camera databases. I use POI's for favourites, but fair point about that - although i thought that the favs list system works differently to most peoples idea of what a favs list was - it gets better over time, i.e. it dynamic and the places you visit move up the list. Might be wrong though.

But good thread all the same, i agree Route66 is rubbish!

Cheers.

Autopilot, did you try the symbian version? What I have found is that many satnav programs are good, but on the symbian version the makers didnt bother too hard in getting it right.

And while copilot's favourites list might get better over time, it still wouldnt display the destination by anything except how you put it in there. For me thats usually postcode, which isnt helpful.

Well to add my 2p to this thread, I've just d/l Navicore for 49 euros on an upgrade (had Navicore 2005 on my 9300) and must say I'm impressed. Switched it on and within a couple of minutes it had a fix (the GPS had last been on the previous day using Nokia Maps at a location 35 miles away). Routing was fast, realtime re-routing very quick, speed camera alerts impressive (say goodbye to RoadPilot subscription), customisable POI with its Extension Editor, nice 3D scrolling display and what really impressed me.... coming to a roundabout, the screen showed the road numbers and towns for the major exits, as well as saying which one I needed. Active distance count down to junction and a discrete speed display in the top left of the screen. I love it.

Just thought Id add that Ive found out why route66 on mine takes such crazy routes.

It refuses to go across either of the Severn bridges! No matter what mode I set it to - and avoid toll roads is set to off, and always has been.

Obviously this doesnt effect all journeys, but its certainly a pointer as to the quality of routing.

Ive tried it on quickest route, and shortest route. It still doesnt choose the bridges. And trust me, its definatly quicker to use the bridge.

And yes, the bridge is on the maps. When I went over it with route66 on it showed up fine, and eventually told me the correct route to go. But only when I was halfway there.

Ok, heres a new one for you all. Its not complete yet, as I havent had a chance to try it outside (and thus get a signal).

Got it today, for around £50, which is UK maps.

Oddly, doesnt seem to have any sort of registration system (and NO your not having a free copy so dont fucking PM me about it, thanks).

You get a lovely box, with a quickstart guide and memory card and adaptor.

Cleverly they give you a micro SD card, and mini sd adaptor, and a micro SD adaptor. Basically you can use this weather you have a phone using micro SD or mini SD, and always able to put it in a normal SD slot. Nice thinking there Garmin.

Its a 512mb Card with 322 MB used up (obviously this might differ for other countries).

There is no manual or DVD, leaving instructions very sparse. However in the quick start manual theres a web address to the full one online. http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GarminMobile20_GarminMobileXTOwnersManual.pdf

This one package supports S60 V2 and V3, windows mobile, and palm trios. This might explain the bigger than normal space taken up on the card.

I'll go into more detail, but heres what you want to know...

Yes it does support custom POI (it also has Garmins own speed cams).

Also, I would like someone to tell me how to know what to copy across to my larger memory card, as there are folders on both memory cards which i obviously dont want to overwipe.

Pictures soon folks!

Can anyone send me a speed cams file in either csv or gpx format? Im not after a freebie (you get 30 days free trial of the garmin ones anyway), it can be as old as you like, I just want to test the custom POI.

It appears Garmin have their own subscription to speed cams, but if I work out where the POI loader puts them, Im sure you can use your own.

I had a Garmin system once. Never again. Dreadful maps, terrible search and poor refresh rate. Guess they're trying to make it attractive to win cust support but I'll stick with what I've got.

Well I'll sell mine on ebay, be it too poor to use.

Havent had it out the office yet, but it does have one shocker Ive just found.

It cannot find abergavveny in the search (even spelt various ways) and it cannot find my mums postcode, dispite it being valid for many many years.

I have to ask what database they are using for this considering it cant recognise that.

Also, the search function is rather clunky, and you have to put what country your looking in first. Might sound minor, but its very annoying and utterly pointless. Still, if it works well I'll consider keeping it.

Already Im thinking of tomtom again due to their postcodes being very uptodate and accurate.

Yep, that was one of the really annoying features. That and the fact that, as you've discovered, it has very poor search capabilities. I put mine in the bin.

This was a short trip done this lunchtime.

On the way it asked me to turn at a completely random place for no apperent reason. There was a turning nearby but it didnt want me to go down that route, so why it asked me to turn I have no idea. Anyway...

Initial route calculation took ages. Also, it made a very odd route on one I did today. I ignored it and did the quickest way. Route recalculation wasnt too long, but wasnt the best either.

More on that in the next post (where I can post more pictures).

Very interesting. I have been looking for a scandinavian version of this, but I am unable to find it. The Garmin site is a mess...

Looking forward to hearing more about your experiences with Garmin, although it already sounds as if it really isn't up to taking on TomTom.

Oh, and I see no reason why anyone would pm you for a copy, because no doubt Garmin has locked the soft to the memory card.

Couldnt agree with you more about the garmin site, its one of the worst corperate ones Ive used.

Youd be suprised how many people I get on here asking me for hacks, presumably because I go on about satnav stuff so much :con?

I did ask Garmin if I could transfer it to another card, as I want to use my 4GB one, not carry another card around with me (its only 512MB). Not an unreasonable request imo, and if you cannot transfer it...that makes it a no buy for me im afraid. Or in this case, a no keep.

I wont have much more to say about Garmin, and I havent any long trips planned (20m mins max). If I do however I shall let you know how the routing is, but so far Im not impressed at all.

If anyone has specific questions, please ask.

...and even if you decided to do a rapidshare of your Garmin, the only thing you would gain is a lot of 'it doesn't work on my device. Something about a hardware error. Please help!' 😊

GPS is a funny thing. Even if we don't use it a lot (I don't), we still want the best soft available, and we want it now! I know I do 😊

Usually when testing new GPS apps I run them on routes that I know, when I don't need the help. That way I can get a feel on how they work, if they can be trusted aso. I can recommend this way for testing your new Garmin 😊

What is your preferred GPS right now? Your top 3?

In two months my contract is fulfilled and I can switch phone. Maybe I'll hang on to my N95, but if a good offer comes up on a device being able to run TomTom, like the HTC TyTN II, I'll take it. Enough of this waiting for things that might never happen...

Lol, too true!

I dont use mine too much, but its there for use, and I dont want it buggering me about, sending me off turnings I dont have to go down, and worst of all, choosing a bad route.

Yes I usually do the routes I know. Thats why Im not usually impressed with the routing 😉

Im trying to get Garmin to replicate one of the routes I did the other day, so people can see how weird it was, but it wont let me do it if the GPS is active. Its really odd.

My prefferred GPS so far, is tomtom5 on my PDA (also with built in reciever - sirf2 I think). I havent actually tried TT6, so Im sure its better.

My then next prefferred one is navigon, which Im currently using. The poscode and address finding is very good. Also, the routing is on par with TT5. Its just missing a few options, like custom POI (speed cams mainly), and the ability to add a destination via scrolling on the map.

As for the third, well thats between Garmin and Navicore. I havent played enough with Garmin yet, but due to the clunky address entry and bad postcodes Navicore would probably win that one.

Funny you mention the HTC, Ive been looking at the GPS enabled ones recently. I have heard on more than one occasion that windows mobile is a bit slow for phone use. Im also really into the build quality of nokia, hardwarewise the 6110 is rock solid and extremely stable.

In theory within 2 months TT should be out for the N95. http://www.n95users.com/forum/third-party-apps/1184-tomtom-6-support-nokia-n95s-gps-coming-soon-10.html

Since my 6110 was simfree, Im going to look into the HTC's. If you have any expirence of using them (as a phone), please let me know.

You were right SBC...

Memory card transfer
Message Body:
I want to run garmin off my main memory card (4GB) rather than the 512mb
one sent with it. I have installed garmin on the phone, what files do I
have to copy across to enable it to run using the other card? I cannot
copy everything across as there are identically named folders and I dont
want to overwrite (resources is one example). Many thanks.

And their reply a few days later..

Thank you for contacting Garmin(Europe)Ltd.

To your email below, the mapping and software is loaded to the SD card
it is loaded onto so you will not be able to move from the preloaded
card onto your own SD card, Then you can buy a city navigator XT on a
DVD so you can loaded onto your PC and then send down to your own SD but
that will only work with are mobile 10 or mobile 20, you can't us a
build in a GPS on your unit.

Kind regards
Brad Rose Garmin (Europe) Ltd

So not exactly helpful then. Ho hum. I CBA taking a spare memory card with me, so Garmin is going to be sold on ebay.

If anyone has any questions about it, ask now before it gets sold!

Well, I'd rarther expected that, but it's still a shame. The whole point in big memory cards is that we don't want to carry a bunch of smaller cards. Is that so hard to understand? Their protection is killing their app. Just like Psiloc, whos software adds another 30 seconds to the boot time. What's the point in creating great soft, if you kill it with protection?

Regarding HTC and the Microsoft Mobile platform...
I owned the first HTC smartphone, the original SPV. Standby time of 11 hours, less if you actually used it! Got it replaced and the next one was the same, so I dumped it. Mind you at that time, whenever someone saw my SPV, even the Nokia 7650 salesmen, they dropped everything they were doing to have a look at it. The bling factor was great!

The next few years I primarily ran SE P800 and P900. Nice phones, but SE seemed to be going nowhere. So when the HTC Typhoon saw daylight, I got one. One of the best phones I have ever owned, and lightyears from the original SPV. Ran TomTom 5 like a dream 😊 No issues with the phone part whatsoever on the earlier ROM's, but the last few had the dreaded Darth Vader syndrome, named after the person which you would sound like during calls.

I switched to the WM2003SE HTC Magician PDA 6 months later. Great in almost all aspects, except it forwarded a huge percentage of my calls to voice mail without ever ringing! This was a well known issue on older(?) HTC models, but as the problem appears to be interfacing issues with the operators network, not everyone experienced it. Seems to be ok in most countries. HTC didn't do a thing to fix this problem, so I decided to give my money to another manufacturer the next time.

The WM5 Mio A701 with SiRF III was my next major device. Phone part was a bit weird. When receiving calls it took 2 seconds from hitting the green button until a connection was established. Some said it was a WM5 issue, but I never got that confirmed. On top of that there was a lot of noise on the line. Which brings me to my latest phone, the...

Nokia N95 😊 Because of the combined issues of 2 secs delay and noise on the line, I got used to not speaking before I heard hissing from the speaker. This caused a few funny issues the first few days, because I kept waiting, not realising that the connection was already made 😊

So all in all, I can't say that MS or HTC have a perfect record regarding the phone quality, in my experience. But I have learned that there is no such thing as a perfect phone. You just need to find one that has bugs/problems you can accept and live with. If HTC have the missed-calls issue under control, and I believe they do, I am ready for my next MS/HTC device 😊

Thanks for the info. Im hoping its not lynching time because I asked about a windows device on AAS! Still, if nokia had worked out the bugs in route66 or at least gone with a better satnav lot I wouldnt be looking.

Lets look into funds for a HTC TyTN II then...although Im not liking the slide out keyboard.

Have to agree re CoPilot. The menu systems are rubbish and a total nightmare to fathom out. Mapping and routing is ok. Much prefer using TT. In fact, so much so, that I think I'd rather use TT with an external receiver than use CoPilot with the internal one.

Kind of defeats the object of getting a phone with built in gps receiver.....

I've written to Navigon support asking if it is possible in MN 6.3 for symbian to navigate to a point on the map - e.g. to save a point on the map as a favourite and navigate to it.

The answer I got back was "YES".

So it SHOULD be possible.

Can anyone confirm?

Depends what you mean. They probably think you can get to a point by puting an address, postcode etc in, and then save it.

But you definatly *cannot* scroll along and save a point on the map. I have tried every button. And there is no cursor to put a point on it anyway. This function along with speed cameras is sorely missing.

See attached image, there is no cursor. You can scroll and zoom in and out, but none of the buttons bring up a cursor or option to add point as a favourite/destination.

If they insist you can, ask them how!

If you could, explain this to them and tell them both these options are needed.

BTW before anyone says, the '3' key just centers it back to the point you started the map on (either the GPS position or whatever address detail you used).

Attachments: Screenshot0066.jpg

Just got a reply back when I asked how.

You can do it - If your device has touchscreen 😞

How stupid is that, why not allow you to use the joystick and click on the same spot?

Ah yes, navigon have a habit of doing that.

They tend not to realise the fact your on about the symbian version which has various differences from the others. For example, when i asked them about speedcams they just directed me to a website selling a progran which added custom POI and alerts. Ok, have to pay a tiny bit but worth it....

...till you realise they dont do a symbian version! 🙄

Tis a shame, as i told them with these 2 functions they would have so many more sales.

Yeah, they should know their own products a bit better 😉

I almost purchased the program yesterday because of the first email, but furtunately I had read this thread beforehand, so I was a bit uncertain of the answer I got and waited for confirmation.

Thank god I did. The program would be useless to me without the ability to navigate to a point on the map.

This afternoon I'm driving to Sweden, and the destination isn't in any navigation program or map-service so the only option is to add it manually on the map (which I did in Route 66).

I just hate Route 66's way of searching for adresses, and it's sometimes strange routing (for this particular route I had do manually put in a waypoint to make it take the best route to the location I'm going to).

Come on TomTom get you act together and release a version for the N95!!!

Yeah, I must admit TomTom is still my favourite, but it bugs me that I have to use an external GPS now that the one in the N95 is working really well after the latest firmware update.

But the user interface an routing on Route 66 sucks.

I just got a reply back from Navigon on my question whether this was something they plan to implement.

The answer was that they have no plans for implementing this on non-touchscreem devices 😞

Bye-Bye Navigon!

Sigh. So much for that then.

Anyways, tomtom has some blinding features as far as Im concerned.

First off - tomtom home. This has the huge advantage of being able to download the latest postcodes FREE to whatever TT device you use.

Second - mapshare. What a wonderful idea. This IMO will make maps many many more times accurate. My only hope is that they dont leave it out on the symbian version.
