N73's camera, work in progress?

OK. I bought this phone to use it as a digital camera. After all, that is what is says on the box:

"The Nokia N73 multimedia device is a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, mechanical shutter, and auto-focus, giving you vivid photo quality for prints up to 10" x 8"

Than, how come that my new 3.2 megapixel N73 has images with file size <500kb, lower than my 1.3 megapixel 6630??

If I wanted a show-off phone with 3.2mpxl cam, I would have bought the N80, with it's Wi-Fi support, and better display. Instead, I got the N73, hoping that it would replace my digital camera, and account for one less device in my bag. Don't get me wrong, I have the Canon 400D, 10mp camera, and I use it too, but I got the N73 to serve the purpose of taking occasional snapshot where I need quick photo document.
Since the phone uses Carl Zeiss optics, mechanical shutter, and auto-focus, I am confident that the problem is not in the device itself, but in the software (firmware) controlling it, and with some tweaking and some more camera options, like compression quality of the image, the N73 can be one above average camera phone...

And what about that black (or should I say purple) color, and pictures snapped in not excellent lightning conditions? C'mon Nokia, I know you can do better...

just wanted to vent a bit, waiting for the new firmware to come out...

cheers,
Nenad

Whats ur firmware ? I noticed that the new firmware compresses more than the oldones.

But overall, the pics quality are very nice.

Hmm... I've also noticed this too, at times picture sizes are smaller than the 6230i i had!😮

But the n73 still takes fab pictures.

I dont know if its rumor or not but I've heard on other forums comparing N73 Still pictures vs N95 still pictures, it appeared that N73 pictures are better than N95 despite the 5MP, But on the other side, the N95 video still a successor since its 30fps and N73 is 15fps.

who says picture qlty s stil best in firmware 4.727... its worse picture.. check the pic qlty indors.... ha!!!!! the best firmware s 3.705... i foooook up my phone wit 4.727...

I have 4.727 FW.

The point is that the device should do what it says on the package. If it's 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics it should at least allow the user to choose desired compression quality, and make the best out of the camera. If it is only a camera phone, may it be 3.2mpxl one, I don't care much, and I would choose the N80 instead...

I am pissed for now at my N73...

cheers

The N73s optics are way above the N80, which is pretty poor in comparison.

Haven't been happy with the quality of images taken with the N95. Some are very good, but it really isn't anything over and above the N73. And battery life isn't anywhere near.

Its only in low lighting that the N73 is poor, but thats the case for most mobile cams. Apart from any SE that takes the MXE-60 flash (ie. K750 will whup all other mobiles in low light imaging with an MXE-60 stuck on the bottom).

try changing the settings or mode

i can achieve over 1mb in picture size with the settings enabled

ie instead of leaving it in auto and just snapping

if youre taking a pic of sunset put it in landscape mode

taking a pic of your mate use portrait

taking a pic of a mate in the dark use night portrait mode

taking a pic in a room with light bulbs use the incadessent mode in lighting options

even try combining a few ie portrait and incadessent

it really wrks with just a few simple clicks before your pic you can achieve perfect pics

my n73 takes pics well on par with the n95

that has a 5mp and the pics still come out at 400kb 800kb so either nokia use very good compression or they are just ripping the detail out

it seems there compression is quite good though

iam quite happy with it

it could do with an xenon flash though 😊 like the sonys why oh why nokia dont do this i dont know not even on the n95 which is a bit poor

ps
selling my n95 on ebay and going back to my n73 it just feels better battery lasts longer and i dont use wifi

n73 is a top device i hope they bring out a replacement model and dont scrap it and move on 😊

n83 or n93 or even n73 i+ or summing silly like that with 5mp wifi xenon 4gb 8gb 16gb micro or mini sdhc support 😊 oh and a decent battery like the n73 and not the n95 n80

Told you guys that N73 is dedicated for pictures taking 😉 the Best Pictures taker among cellphones...

I don't know what settings should I tamper with. A picture taken outside, on Auto setting, with the Autofocus feature of the N73 cam, and with the 3M size, should be the best the N73's camera can produce. Camera settings have nothing to do with image compression, and image size.

But, as I've heard, it is only in the last FW, 4.7XX, Nokia uses this crappy compression settings...

course they do mate

they enhance detail, colours etc fade things in the background, zoom on things in foreground.

if you was outside and taking a pic in daylight id either use portrait or landscape depending on how far the object you wanted to capture was

iam not the only one saying this has wrked check the threads above mate it does wrk clear as day

ive just taken a pic outside and got 1.3mb it was of the my car with the sunshining on it

i usedportrait mode as it was quite close

it defently affets pic size mate trust

its not making a difference to compression settings but to the actrual detail captured ie more detail so after the same compression from the phone the pic size will be bigger because you used a setting to capture more detail

autofocus is a quick friendly methid to give quick even results not the best method

hope you get it sorted soon as i said it seems my n73 is on par with my n95 there is hardly any difference

they use compression settings on all there firmwares

i agree night shots arent brill but if you use night mode etc or the light settings depending on what bulbs light the room they get alot better

it is a great camera but wish it had a xenon flash like sonys thenit would rule the roost of camera phones have you seen the new n82 prototype??

upgraded to 5mp cam--wifi--micro sdch--xenon flash-- same size and sort of build as n73 ie candy bar design

due for release late late 2007 ie q4 2007 😊

rooll on

do aweb search looks like a hot phone 😊

even if N73 doesnt have a xenon flash it still shud be able to take good pictures in night mode, all i get are spotty black backgrounds...on SE even with the flash off the night pics come out black for black and not spotty gray!..
is there ne software (third party camera application ) or something that utilizes the amazing carl zeis lens to its fullest?

Just put it through one of the PC applications, Photoshop or whatever.

The lens in the N73 is okay by phone standards, but the Zeiss bit is just marketing spiel.

I've just gone and bought a K800 to use for nights out (flash=useful 😉, and overall its a more usable phone than the N73. Camera that starts up in a second rather than 5-10 secs, menu response generally instantaneous, can take >2 gig cards ....

Although I'll be keeping the N73 for TomTom and video recording.
